They might be also-rans, but they’re very, very interesting also-rans.

The Demon Deacon offense has exploded, with QB John Wolford going off over the last few weeks, making things interesting in a 48-37 loss to Notre Dame, and beating Louisville two weeks ago.

Yes, the Demon Deacons lost four of their last five games, but they’re just a win away from going bowling with home games against NC State and Duke to close.

Syracuse has lost two straight, but they were on the road against Miami and Florida State in good fights.

This is still the team that beat Clemson, and this is still a dangerous enough team to have battled everyone throughout a brutal schedule.

However, this might turn out to be the best team that’s not going bowling. The Orange have to win two of their last three games with a trip to Louisville and with Boston College to close. At home, this winning this is a must.

One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win

There isn’t much of a pass rush, and there aren’t enough takeaways, but the Syracuse defense has been a shocking killer on third downs.

Florida State only converted 1-of-13 third down chances. Clemson converted 2-of-11, and no one other than LSU has been able to convert more than 25% of their chances.

Wake Forest is just okay on third downs, but it’ll have to get past being frustrated time and again. Syracuse cranks up the intensity on third downs, and it’s got the offense to take advantage of the momentum shifts.

This might not be the explosive offense compared to the past few years, it’s opportunistic.

One Reason Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Wake Forest passing game has become special.

It was solid over the first half of the season, but after Wolford was banged up and out for the Clemson game, he came back and rocked with a good game against Georgia Tech, a 461-yard, five-score day against Louisville, and last week against Notre Dame, a 331-yard, two touchdown performance kept it interesting.

With the most efficient passing game in the ACC, the Demon Deacons are able to push the ball down the field, they don’t turn the ball over, and they take advantage of every opportunity.

Syracuse has a problem in turnover margin – Wake Forest will be a +2.

What’s Going To Happen

This might be the ACC’s most entertaining game this week.

Both teams are fearless, both are great at pushing the deep ball, and both are used to great at cranking up the intensity on both sides of the ball.

The home field will make a difference.

If this was at Wake Forest, the Demon Deacons would be the call, but in the Carrier Dome, Eric Dungey will do just enough to outduel Wolford – and the Orange D will rise up just enough late – to pull out a thriller.
