Penn State had one job to do. It had to get through a three-game stretch of Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State winning two of them, and it failed.

The season is hardly over, though, even if the national championship dream is done.

The Big Ten title dream is over – Ohio State and Michigan State aren’t both going to lose two of their last three games – but there’s still a chance to get to a New Year’s Six bowl for the second year in a row by winning out against Rutgers, Nebraska and at Maryland.

The Scarlet Knights might just be 4-5, but this is already a relatively successful season with wins in three of their last four games.

They have to win two of their last three to go bowling – at Indiana and Michigan State close things out – but just being able to dream of a post-season date after their awful start is terrific.

One Reason Why Penn State Will Win

Rutgers still has no passing game. As long as the Nittany Lions can stop Gus Edwards and the Scarlet Knight ground attack, everything will be fine.

Rutgers has to slow the game to a dead stop, but it doesn’t have the explosion to keep up if Penn State can get out to any sort of a lead. Giovanni Rescigno completed just 8-of-15 passes for 107 yards and a score with a pick in the win over Maryland last week.

He’s not going to throw for 400 yards against the Nittany Lion secondary like Michigan State’s Brian Lewerke.

For all of the talk about the Penn State offense, the defense has been every bit as strong, ranking 15th in the nation against the run. It’s going to rise up and stop the Scarlet Knight offense cold.

One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win

How down is Penn State?

James Franklin might be a master motivator who knows how to keep things rolling – look at what the guy did for a program that was this close to being destroyed by the NCAA – but it’s going to take a whole lot of work to get the team back up after the last two weeks.

Rutgers needs to come out and pound away from the start, dictate the tempo, keep the Penn State offense off the field, and own the turnover margin. The Scarlet Knights have thrown one pick in the last three games, and with just two total in eight of the nine.

Don’t fumble, hold on to the ball for close to 40 minutes, and stiffen defensively in the red zone. Keep it close, and hope Penn State isn’t able to gear it up.

What’s Going To Happen

Saquon Barkley is overdue to be great.

Oh sure, he’ll hit a big home run here and there, but can he simply come up with a 100-yard rushing game again?

It might not be a pretty performance, but at home, it’ll be cathartic for the Nittany Lions after a sloppy first half. Rutgers just won’t have the O to keep up.
