Could Wake Forest screw this all up?
Notre Dame might be red hot and ranked No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings, but the Demon Deacons are just good enough and just dangerous enough to end all the fun as the ultimate sandwich team.
The Irish had to gear it up for NC State, and it has the showdown against Miami next, but the Demon Deacons can’t be blown off.
They overcame a three-game losing streak with a strong performance against Louisville, and now they need one more win to go bowling – that’s not going to be a breeze with at Syracuse, NC State and Duke still to play.
But no bowl at this point would beat ruining Notre Dame’s dream season.
At this point, Josh Adams and the Irish are worth watching no matter what, and unlike the NC State and USC games, they might actually have a four quarter fight.
One Reason Why Notre Dame Will Win
At this point, it doesn’t seem to matter who the Notre Dame offense has to face – it’s rocking against everyone but Georgia.
NC State came into South Bend with the sixth-best run defense in the nation, and it got ripped apart for 318 yards a week after the ground game cranked out 377 yards against USC.
But for all the love the offense is getting, the defense is playing almost as well.
The NC State and USC running games didn’t go anywhere, making it three straight games the Irish D held an opposing ground attack to under 100 yards. Georgia ran for a touchdown – that’s it. The Irish D has yet to allow more than 185 yards on the ground with just that one TD.
Wake Forest isn’t going to be able to run well, either, however …
One Reason Why Wake Forest Will Win
Can John Wolford do that again?
It was supposed to be a nice help when he was back from injury a few weeks ago, and then the guy dropped 461 yards and five scores on Louisville. On the year, he’s averaging over nine yards per throw with 15 scores and just two picks.
It’s possible to throw a bit on the Notre Dame secondary that gave up 345 yards to Michigan State and 200 yards or more six times.
But for Wake Forest to win, the defensive front has to continue to go all Wake Forest defensive front. It doesn’t always translate into stopping the run, but the No. 1 team in the country in tackles for loss came up with 11 against Louisville. The Demon Deacons have to stop Josh Adams before he can get started, but …
What’s Going To Happen
Lots of tackles for loss don’t matter when the runner hits the second level.
Notre Dame doesn’t need to do a whole lot of East-West running, and it should get a decent all-around game from the entire backfield – Brandon Wimbush will throw just efficiently enough to get by.
The O line should be able to blast away, the Irish runners should be able to keep the fun going, and the defense will overcome a strong day from Wolford.
It won’t be quite as scintillating as the last few blowout wins, but it’ll be a solid next step to get to the Miami game.
