You’ll have to forgive Stanford if it’s a wee bit more interested in what’s happening in Seattle at the exact same time this is going on.

If Washington beats Washington State, Stanford is off to face USC in the Pac-12 Championship. But in the meantime, beating Notre Dame in a national spotlight game matters a wee bit.

There’s a path for the Irish to be in the College Football Playoff discussion if just about everyone who matters loses, but realistically, they’ll be looking to secure a slot in a New Year’s Six bowl game, and they might be knocked out with a loss.

The Cardinal are on a nice run of seven wins in their last eight games, but that 24-21 loss to Washington State is the big deal in the equation. For now, though, winning and being in the hunt for a ten-win season is good no matter what. It’s not a machine, but it’s winning.

Notre Dame is sputtering a bit, but it’s still a loaded team with the running game and talent to show that all the good things over the first half of the season were for real. It would’ve liked to have been playing this week for something more, but just beating Stanford will be good enough.

One Reason Why Notre Dame Will Win

The Irish have to get their running game mojo back.

They screwed up against Miami by throwing, and the rushing attack never really worked, finishing with 109 yards. So what did it do against Navy?

It came out throwing.

This is a quick-hitting, fast-strike ground game that can hit the home run from anywhere on the field, and now it’s time to get the offensive line working again to get back to the offense that pounded out 300 yards on a regular basis.

The Cardinal run defense has been okay, but not great. Not enough teams are committing to the ground game, but if Notre Dame can bang out about 40 carries, it should be able to control the game.

One Reason Why Stanford Will Win

The Notre Dame run defense has taken a wee bit of a break.

Awesome for most of the season, the Irish didn’t give up more than 185 yards on the ground until Wake Forest came to town.

Now, over the last three weeks the Irish have allowed more than 200 yards, getting hit by a pedestrian Miami ground attack for 237 yards and three scores, and then struggling to handle the Navy option O for 277 yards and a touchdown.

Bryce Love hasn’t been quite right with a nagging ankle injury keeping him in check, but he’s still a home run hitter when he gets hit chances. Still in the Heisman hunt – at least for the No. 2 spot – this is his showcase game.

What’s Going To Happen

The Stanford defense is okay, but it’s not that amazing. This isn’t the killer of the last several seasons.

Notre Dame won’t get cute or quirky this week. It’ll start running keep running, and let the great offensive line pound away.

Love will try to give it a run, and he’ll have a few great moments, but he’s just not quite 100%. The Cardinal passing game won’t be able to pick up the slack.

Everyone will come into the game wanting to see Love, but will come away talking about Josh Adams, who’ll come up with two big home runs to get the Irish to ten wins.
