This is everything for Notre Dame, important for perception for the Hurricanes, and really, really big for the national title puzzle.

Miami vs. Notre Dame is always interesting no matter what, but it’s the most important showdown between the two since the Catholics vs. Convicts era – even if it’s not nearly as spicy.

It’s this simple. If Notre Dame loses, it’s out of the College Football Playoff. Win, and it’s got a great case to be No. 2 in the next round of rankings with Navy and at Stanford to close.

Stanford is mediocre at college football. This might be it. This might be what stands between the Irish and a spot in the final four.

Miami still isn’t getting a whole lot of love on a national basis, but the resume is quickly building as the only team to beat Toledo to go along with brand-name wins over Florida State, Georgia Tech and Syracuse.

But it was the dominant performance against Virginia Tech last week that showed that, yeah, the team might just be fore real.

The Canes can lose and be fine. They have to get to the ACC Championship at 11-1 – at worst – and has to beat, most likely, Clemson. That’s it. Do that, get into the College Football Playoff. Get to the ACC title at 12-0, and they still have to win it to get in.

One Reason Why Miami Will Win

Virginia Tech.

That was a good, sound, rock-solid Virginia Tech team that came rolling into the Rock, and Miami didn’t let it breathe.

The defense has given up yards here and there – playing Georgia Tech will skew the stats a bit – but it pitched a gem against the Hokies, holding them to 102 yards on the ground and picking off Josh Jackson twice.

How do you slow down the Notre Dame rushing machine? At the moment, you don’t, and the Canes will give up 200 yards or so, but they’ll also make more than their share of big things happen in the backfield with one of the nation’s most aggressive front sevens.

Star Irish RB Josh Adams will supposedly play, but is he a full go after getting knocked out against Wake Forest? Brandon Wimbush hurt his hand and left for a stretch, but he’s no 100%, either.

Miami is amazing at forcing turnovers and great at suffocating teams when it absolutely has to, but …

One Reason Why Notre Dame Will Win

The Miami offense isn’t good.

It’s awful on third downs, was worse against Virginia Tech at throwing the ball at times, and it struggled way too much to put the game well out of reach.

Malik Rosier has been fine, but he misfired on 11 of his 21 throws with three picks. He ran well, but he has to be nearly perfect – he can’t give the Irish O any easy chances.

The Hurricanes are second-to-last in the ACC on third downs. This week, that’s not okay against an ultra-efficient offensive machine that doesn’t make a whole lot of mistakes.

Yes, Wimbush got hurt. And Ian Book stepped in and hit all eight of his passes. Yes, Adams was out early. And the Irish finished with 380 rushing yards and four scores.

Notre Dame is playing as well as anyone in college football right now. Miami isn’t.

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, Miami looked amazing against Virginia Tech, but Virginia Tech is just okay – it was a bit overrated and wasn’t ready for primetime.

How do you overcome the emotion of a big night game? How do you overcome the energy of a fired up team looking to make a statement? You let your NFL offensive line take over, and that’s exactly what Notre Dame is about to do.

Miami will win its share of battles on defense, but the offense is too mediocre, it doesn’t move the chains well enough, and Rosier isn’t going to be as perfect as he needs to be.

It won’t be a USC/NC State-like wipeout for the Irish. But it’ll be effective enough to all but cement a spot in the College Football Playoff.
