Is Pitt good now?
The Panthers beating Duke wasn’t any big whoop, but tagging a solid Virginia team 31-14? Now, a lost season has hope, needing two wins in the final three games to go bowling.
Two problems with that: at Virginia Tech and at home against Miami. Pitt will have to win at least one of those.
But first, the Panthers have to dispose of a brutally beaten up and bad North Carolina team that has yet to do anything but get by a horrible Old Dominion squad.
It’s plucky – using Virginia and giving Miami a rough time in a 24-19 loss – but there are just too many injuries and too many young players still trying to figure out their way.
One Reason Why North Carolina Will Win
It’s not like the Pitt offense is a killer.
It’s fine, but it’s wildly inconsistent and it struggles to get to around 400 yards. It was able to do it against horrendous Rice team, and it had its out-of-body experience with a 485-yard day against Duke, but the O isn’t going to run away with the game and hide.
The North Carolina run defense wasn’t even close against the killer ground games – Georgia Tech and Notre Dame – but it’s coming off a strong last few weeks with fewer missed tackles and more stops.
Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Miami were all held under four yards per pop, with the Hurricanes stuffed for just 59 yards.
With Max Browne out for the year, Pitt has to rely solely on the rushing attack. Stop RB Darrin Hall, and make Ben DiNucci throw for the win. However …
One Reason Why Pitt Will Win
That’s easier said than done.
Pitt needed a spark. It needed something to take over the offense and settle down everything else, and that turned out to be the 220-pound Hall.
A little-used cog in the system for most of the year, the coaching staff unleashed him against Duke. 254 yards and three scores late, Pitt came up with a key win. He followed it up with 111 yards and a score against Virginia.
The formula for this might be easy. Run Hall, rely on the defense to stop a UNC offense that can’t keep the chains moving, and keep it simple. The Panthers are 15th in the nation in time of possession, and UNC is dead last in the ACC and 121st in the country.
The Tar Heel O isn’t explosive enough to take advantage of what little time it has the ball.
What’s Going To Happen
Pitt will be fine in the national spotlight, but it’ll have to overcome a few big pass plays to get out with the win.
The ground game will take over in the second half, but the Tar Heels will throw everything at the Panther defense, using several wrinkles to try keeping up the pace – and it won’t work.
Neither quarterback will be great, but Pitt can run the ball. UNC can’t.
