Is this the ACC Game of the Year? At the very least, it’s No. 1A with NC State and Clemson doing its thing on the other side.
This isn’t the ACC Coastal championship with Georgia Tech still alive and Virginia still hanging around – at least technically – but go ahead and call it the ACC Coastal championship.
Miami didn’t get any love in the first College Football Playoff rankings being put in at the ten, but whatever – win out, and it’s in the CFP. There might not be a truly great win yet – Georgia Tech is okay – but beating No. 13 Virginia Tech would change that.
With Notre Dame up next, and then Virginia, just get to the ACC championship, keep winning, and everything is fine.
It’s the same thing for Virginia Tech, with the only loss to Clemson and with West Virginia and Boston College the two good wins. But now it has to go on the road for three of the final four games, with Georgia Tech up next, then at home against Pitt, and going away to Virginia.
Again, win out, take the ACC title, go 12-1, and the Hokies will almost certainly get into the dance.
One Reason Why Virginia Tech Will Win
The Miami defense gets the ACC love from the Coastal with an aggressive style and the aggressiveness to get into the backfield on a regular basis, but Virginia Tech leads the ACC in scoring defense and is second behind Clemson in total D.
The run defense has been an absolute rock after struggling a bit early against West Virginia. Clemson ran for two touchdowns, and that’s it – no one else has scored on the ground, and only WVU and BC managed to average more than 3.5 yards per carry.
How is it happening? The Hokies are fantastic at getting into the backfield with 64 tackles for loss on the year, and while the Miami O line has been strong, it’s about to get tested.
One Reason Why Miami Will Win
The Hurricanes just don’t screw up.
Miami has been the anti-Florida State – as a comp – when it comes to how things can be so different when it comes to an offensive line. FSU can’t block anyone, the young backfield doesn’t have any time to work, and there are too many mistakes. The Hurricane O line has been fantastic at times, the young backfield is getting time, and the production is there when it has to be.
But it’s about the defense when it comes to Miami. Fourth in the nation in sacks, and third in tackles for loss, the pressure is relentless. Clemson was able to get into the Virginia Tech backfield and apply pressure, and Josh Jackson threw two picks.
He threw just one interception in the other seven games.
Miami should generate the heat, and Jackson has to hold up on the road.
What’s Going To Happen
Both teams are fantastic with great defenses, smart quarterbacks who make big things happen, and great coaching staffs who should be ready for a heavyweight bout.
The big difference? Miami can’t convert third down plays, and Virginia Tech is among the best teams in the country at third down D.
The Hokies win a thriller to take control of the Coastal on their way into the top ten of the next College Football Playoff rankings.
