If Iowa State isn’t the most interesting team in the country, it’s among the hottest. Not only has it won four straight, but it beat two top four teams along the way – taking down Oklahoma and TCU – to be knee-deep in the Big 12 title chase.

However, three of the final four regular season games are on the road, starting with this dangerous fight against a West Virginia team that just can’t seem to get things going.

The Mountaineers couldn’t get out of their own way last week – more specifically, Will Grier couldn’t stop throwing picks – in a 50-39 loss to Oklahoma State.

Just good enough to hang with the Virginia Techs, TCUs and Oklahoma States of the world, West Virginia hasn’t been good enough to rise up and win against the better teams.

And now, Iowa State qualifies as one of those better teams.

There’s still time to get back in the Big 12 title chase, but lose to the Cyclones, and just getting to a bowl game – needing one more win with at Kansas State, Texas, and at Oklahoma to close – will be tough.

One Reason Why Iowa State Will Win

How are the Cyclones doing this? How are they able to beat teams with far more talent and seemingly far stronger?

Takeaways.

It was a maddening game for TCU last week, with chance after chance after chance slipping away in the 14-7 loss. Time and again, it seemed like the offense was about to take over, and time and again, the Cyclone defense stepped up.

Iowa State has been a +2 in turnover margin over each of the last three games with nine takeaways over this amazing four-game winning run.

The two times the Cyclones didn’t win the turnover battle were the two losses against Texas sand Iowa.

Last week, Grier threw four picks and the team turned if over five times in the loss to Oklahoma State, but …

One Reason Why West Virginia Will Win

That was an aberration, at least over the last month.

Giveaways were an issue during a sloppy early stretch, and then the Mountaineers went three straight games with just one giveaway before the Oklahoma State debacle.

There’s a chance Grier rebounds in a hurry and becomes the bomber who hit Texas Tech and Baylor for five touchdown passes in the two wins, and threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns in the loss to TCU.

Iowa State has the worst third down defense in the conference, and it doesn’t have the running game like Oklahoma State’s to make WVU scramble as much as it did last week.

But again, it comes down to the mistakes. Don’t screw up, Will, and all will be okay.

What’s Going To Happen

The Iowa State defense has been at a whole other level over the last six games. Playing on the road didn’t matter in Norman or Lubbock, but this week, it’ll be Grier’s redemption that makes the biggest difference.

Both teams will bomb away, but Grier will just a little bit sharper. The interceptions aren’t going to come, and at home, this is when West Virginia finally shows it can beat a good team.
