Indiana (4-6) vs. Rutgers (4-6) Game Preview
Broadcast, TV, Game Time
Date: Saturday, November 18th
Game Time: 12:00 pm ET
Venue: Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, IN
Indiana might not be all that great, and it might have a whole slew of issues, but it beat Illinois like it needed to. Get by Rutgers, and then it’s off to Purdue for a shot at bowl eligibility.
That’s still a big deal for a Hoosier program that’s been competitive, but now needs to close strong, especially in the home finale.
Rutgers pushed Penn State harder than the 35-6 final might indicate, and it still has dreams of getting a 13th game, too.
Indiana isn’t that good – Rutgers can absolutely win this, setting up a home showdown against Michigan State with a desperate chance at a bowl.
At the very least, it should be a solid, competitive battle between two teams around the same level. Both will play hard – even if it’s not going to be scintillating football.
One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win
It doesn’t seem right with a veteran quarterback in Richard Lagow filling in for an injury Peyton Ramsey, and with a decent group of receivers led by Simmie Cobbs, but there’s NOTHING happening down the field.
This is the ultimate dink-and-dunk passing attack that will throw for big yards, and it’ll come up with a few touchdowns, but there’s nothing to worry about down the field.
So, with all of those short compilations, IU has to own the clock, right? Not even close – it’s style tries to keep things moving.
The Hoosiers are dead last in the Big Ten in time of possession – and Rutgers needs to take advantage of that.
The Scarlet Knights should be able to grind the game down to a nub, but …
One Reason Why Indiana Will Win
Score early, and that’s it. Indiana might not push the ball down the field, but it has a passing game. Rutgers doesn’t.
Rutgers has to run well to win, and while it might come up with a few good drives, it can’t do anything consistently well. The Hoosiers have bottled up everyone but Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio State, and that’s not Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights can’t move the chains and aren’t equipped for any sort of a comeback. Last in the Big Ten in total offense averaging 285 yards per game, IU could put this away in the first two drives.
What’s Going To Happen
Indiana will struggle and sputter at times, and Rutgers will find a way to hang around with its stuffy style, but the running game won’t roll against Tegray Scales and company. The Hoosiers will overcome two big turnovers to stay alive for a bowl, setting up a fun battle with Purdue.
