This is one of the biggest Old Oaken Bucket games ever.

The winner goes to a bowl game, and the loser is done with a very, very bitter pill to swallow losing to its rival.

Indiana has bounced back after a rough run of four straight losses, beating Illinois and Rutgers to get back in the mix for a bowl.

The offense has been solid, the defense has improved, and the team was able to take care of the lightweights. But it has a win over Virginia, too.

This has been a bigger first season under head coach Jeff Brohm than Purdue fans could’ve hoped for.

After losing to Northwestern, it seemed like it would be a decent stepping-stone campaign with a lot to get excited about for 2018. And then came the win over Iowa on the road, and now there’s a real, live shot to get bowling for the first time since the 2011 Little Caesars.

One Reason Why Indiana Will Win

And here comes the Indiana pass rush.

There might be a slew of problems this year for IU, and the offense hasn’t been consistent enough, but the defensive front has been okay at times against the run and great at getting into the backfield.

The D took over the Illinois game with eight sacks, and it hit Rutgers time and again last week. With 21 sacks in the last five games since the loss to Michigan, Robert McCray, Tegray Scales, and the Indiana D have been terrors.

And that’s a problem for the Purdue offensive line. The ground game has been okay at times, not great, and the pass protection has been way too spotty. If the Boilermakers have to rely on a key third down play, forget it.

One Reason Why Purdue Will Win

Indiana is one of the few teams in college football that does less to control the clock than Purdue.

The up-tempo style and passing game occasionally puts defenses on their heels, but more often than not – at least this year – it’s led to fizzled drives, turnovers, and nothing happening deep.

To be fair, the passing game has picked up over the last month for the Hoosiers, but there’s a whole lot of dinking and dunking doing on.

The Purdue defense has been shockingly solid, only allowing more than 17 points twice in the last seven games, including against Wisconsin. This isn’t the game IU will open it up.

What’s Going To Happen

Fired up at home, and with a chance to do something big, the Purdue defense will overcome a strong day from the IU D to pull out the sixth win needed to move on to a bowl.

Indiana won’t be able to run the ball, the passing game will stall far too often, and the problems controlling the clock will all help out the Boilermakers.

Purdue’s offense won’t be anything scintillating, but it’ll take advantage of two takeaways to get the job done, finishing up with a walk-off field goal.
