The bottom two teams in the Pac-12 North are trying to find something positive, and for Cal, it’s the game it has to have to have any hope of going bowling.

The Bears inexplicably came out flat in a bad loss at Colorado, but with a mediocre UCLA team still to deal with after a date at Stanford, there’s still a chance to get to six wins.

But they need to take down a suddenly-plucky Oregon State team.

Under interim head coach Cory Hall, the Beavers have found a bit of a spark – but they still lost. They couldn’t come through in a 36-33 loss to Colorado, and dropped a heartbreaking 15-14 loss to Stanford.

And now, in a period of transition, they’re still looking for their first win over an FBS team.

One Reason Why California Will Win

Oregon State’s defense is a nightmare on third downs.

Stanford struggled all game long, and finished with just 222 yards, but it moved the chains when it had to, highlighted with a key fourth down throw on the game-winning drive.

Cal isn’t great on third downs, but it’s okay at times, it’s great at taking the ball away, and when it’s usually strong at cranking up the defensive pressure.

The loss to Colorado was rough, but this week the Bears should be able to force several mistakes against an offense that’s more than happy to give the ball away.

The Bears can bank on at least two takeaways – and they have to convert.

One Reason Why Oregon State Will Win

If the Beaver defensive front could really hold Stanford’s running game to just 81 yards – it doesn’t matter than it didn’t have Bryce Love, that’s still a good thing – it should be able to keep the Cal ground game to a dead stop.

The Bears aren’t doing much of anything on the line. They’re not keeping the quarterbacks upright, and they’re not generating any sort of a consistent push.

If Ross Bowers isn’t on – he just hit Colorado for 359 yards and three scores – the Cal offense won’t go anywhere.

What’s Going To Happen

There just isn’t enough consistent Oregon State offense to rely on.

A total disaster outside of the Washington State performance, the Cal defense will rise up and be far, far stronger – at least this week.

The Beavers won’t be able to throw like Steven Montez and the Buffs did, and they don’t have a Phillip Lindsay who can crank up 161 rushing yards.

It’ll be an inspired early effort by the Bears, and they’ll be able to coast the rest of the way.
