West Virginia Universities Athletic Director Shane Lyons announced a 4-year contact extension for head basketball coach Bob Huggins. Huggins contact with the university will now run until 2027.
Huggins is the third winningest active coach as he enters his 36th season as a head coach. He began his coaching tenure with WVU before the 2008-2009 season and has 229 wins so far as the Mountaineers head coach. Huggins played for WVU from 1975-1977.
Huggins released a statement that said, “I want to thank President Gee, Shane Lyons and our administration for their support and commitment to Mountaineer Basketball. I am very lucky to be able to coach in the state and at the University that I love so much. I also want to also thank my family, friends and our fans for all their love and support. We will continue to work hard every day so that we can make this great state proud of its basketball team.”
Huggins contact language is interesting. His contract goes until 2027 but after the 2021-2022 season, Huggins will begin his five-year Emeritus status with the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics where he would work in public relations, development activities and other assignments that the then Athletic Director would assign to him. If Huggins wanted, he could decline the Emeritus status and continue to coach, if mutually agreed upon between Huggins and the director.
