For all of the fun ASU had beating Washington and Utah, and for all of the positives, it still needs to get bowl eligible – and it doesn’t, and can’t, leave it up to the showdown against Arizona.

The Sun Devil defense has gone back to being the Sun Devil defense after a nice midseason stretch, and now it has to rise up on the road against an Oregon State team looking for something positive to point to in a painfully lost season.

The road date at Oregon next week is the bowl game, but screwing up ASU and winning the home finale would be nice.

The team is plucky, and it’ll fight, but now it has to produce a win against an FCS team.

One Reason Why Arizona State Will Win

The Oregon State defense hasn’t even been close on third down stops. The Arizona State offense hasn’t been able to come up with enough big plays to keep things moving – it’s tenth in the Pac-12 in third down conversions – but it’s going to look a whole lot better this week.

The Beavers have the second-worst defense in the nation on third downs, allowing teams to hit a whopping 53% of their chances.

Arizona rolled with 7-of-9 conversions, Cal connected on 60% of its tries, and only two teams – Portland State and Stanford – were under 46%.

ASU has to control the clock from the start. 14th in the nation in time of possession, it should have the ball for at least 33 minutes.

One Reason Why Oregon State Will Win

If the passing game is going to try working, this would be the week.

Oregon State and QB Darell Garretson are coming off their best passing day since Jake Luton got knocked out for the season in September, hitting Arizona for 209 yards and four scores.

This isn’t going to be Texas Tech when it comes to bombing away, but it has to at least try against an ASU defense that got lit up by Colorado and UCLA over the last two weeks, and gave up three touchdown passes to the week before.

Oregon State doesn’t have a Steven Montez, Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold, but Garretson has to air it out from the start.

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State will come out inspired and should be in the game into the second half with a balanced offense that will get out to a big start, but the defense will melt down late.

ASU will need a while to wake up, and then Manny Wilkins and the passing game will bomb their way back in before breaking Beaver hearts in the final few minutes.
