Just when it seemed like Arizona State was poised and ready to make a move in the Pac-12 South, it got ripped to shreds in an ugly 48-17 loss to USC.

Just when it seemed like Colorado was poised and ready to go gently into that goodnight, it pulled off a terrific 44-28 win over Cal to come a win away from going bowling.

The Buffs aren’t doing much defensively, but they found their offense against the Bears with a dangerous and explosive attack that wouldn’t stop.

The Sun Devils aren’t doing much offensively, but with wins over Washington and Utah before the USC debacle, there was hope. Now, they need to win two of their last four – road games at UCLA and Oregon State might not be too big of a problem – to get to a bowl game.

Beating the Buffs would obviously be a big boost.

One Reason Why Colorado Will Win

Was that the real Steven Montez? After hitting just 4-of-13 passes in the loss to Washington State, the Buffs needed to make a change to provide some sort of a spark to the offense.

Instead, Montez was brilliant against Cal, completing 20-of-26 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

As it turned out, the ASU wins over Utah and Washington might have been a slight aberration, at least defensively. There’s still a pass rush, and there’s still the upside to go back to the form of a few weeks ago, but USC was able to do whatever it wanted, with Ronald Jones running for over 200 yards and Sam Darnold coming up with one of his best performances of the season.

Montez isn’t Darnold, and RB Philip Lindsay might not be Jones, but they’re talented enough to find the same groove they did against the Bears.

One Reason Why Arizona State Will Win

Colorado still doesn’t have much a pass rush and it still doesn’t do enough to get into the backfield. ASU desperately needs the break, because the O line can’t seem to keep defenses from hitting the quarterback or getting behind the line.

The key for ASU is to get a decent game out of the defense and then let the other team screw up. That’s what happened against Washington, and the Huskies fizzled time and again in key moments. The Sun Devils don’t commit penalties, and they don’t turn the ball over enough to give away easy chances.

On the flip side, Colorado is one of the nation’s most penalized teams, and it usually needs to win the turnover battle.

What’s Going To Happen

Which team will show up – on both sides?

The consistency hasn’t been there in any way, but Colorado has the offensive pop to put up USC-like numbers against an Arizona State defense that has to find its groove again.

The Arizona State defense that was so fantastic for two weeks might be back to its former self, but the Colorado D isn’t USC’s or Washington’s.

Arizona State isn’t showing enough of an offense to keep up if and when the Buffs get going early.

The Buffs will get going early.
