San Diego State fans should expect Coach Brian Dutcher to bring his own flair to the program this season.
San Diego State head coach Brian Dutcher made a massive move this offseason, he moved a couple inches to his left on the bench on the way to being named the new head coach of the Aztecs. Dutcher has the unenviable job of replacing a legend in retired coach Steve Fisher, however there is a lot to suggest that Dutcher will do just fine.
Some people have questioned what effect having Dutcher instead of Fisher will have on the team, usually with a pessimistic tone. To me it is silly to think that this team will suffer any type of setback or will lose a step because Coach Fisher is gone. Quite the opposite, this team will continue to build off the foundation that has been set.
Expect not much to change in the Dutcher era, essentially because he has said so on numerous occasions. Dutcher has repeatedly stated that it would be foolish for him to ignore everything he has learned from Coach Fisher just to do it his way. Instead he plans to take what the program already does and add his own twist to it.
Expect the defense to be stout once again. Coach Fisher was well known for allowing his assistants to take charge of specific aspects of the game and one person that has had a profound effect on the Aztecs is Coach Justin Hutson. Hutson has been credited as being a defensive-mind and his work on the defensive end has made San Diego State one of the premier defensive teams year after year.
Expect the team to be better. Coach Dutcher recently stated that every coach wishes to have a roster like he has in their first year and that is likely more than just coach speak. The Aztecs return three starters from last year (Trey Kell, Malik Pope, and Jeremy Hemsley) and add a scoring point guard (Devin Watson), a legit big man (Kameron Rooks), a redshirt freshman that is the prototypical Aztec (Jalen McDaniels) and a freshman class that will be pushing for minutes (Matt Mitchell, Adam Seiko, and Jordan Schakel). This year’s roster has a chance to be special and for a first year coach this is a dream scenario).
Expect the program to continue getting better. Coach Dutcher has been at San Diego State for 18 years, since the beginning of the Fisher era. He deserves a lot of credit for helping the program get to where it has. This is not a rebuild job, rather a continuation of the work that he and Coach Fisher started. The last two years have been a bump in the road, however Dutcher should be able to right the ship and get the Aztecs back on track.
Coach Dutcher will bring his own style to the program as the new head man, however expect all the things that worked to continue. He will now be in charge of righting the program and ensuring that it continues to improve. With continuity on the staff and a talented roster the Aztecs are primed to move in the right direction in his first year.
