All of a sudden, a seemingly mediocre ACC matchup has a little juice.

Virginia is knee-deep in the Coastal race, starting out 2-0 in conference play and one of just three teams – NC State and Miami the others – still unbeaten in conference play.

Arguably the biggest national surprise, the 5-1 Cavaliers might not be scintillating, but they’re rock-solid – and they’re winning.

With Pitt up next, there’s a terrific chance of being 7-1 going into the make-or-break November if they can get by a Boston College team coming off a desperately needed win.

As shocking as the Syracuse win over Clemson was, in the ACC, BC beating Louisville was an even bigger stunner.

The Eagles weren’t doing anything quite right, and then the offense ran wild against the Cardinals in a thrilling 45-42 shootout. And now, they can keep the dream of going bowling alive if they can pull off a win in Charlottesville.

One Reason Why Boston College Will Win

Well, hello A.J. Dillon.

The Boston College running game mostly worked around Jon Hilliman, but the 6-0, 240-pound Dillon cranked up 120 yards against Central Michigan a few weeks ago, and crunched Louisville for 272 yards and four scores on 39 carries last week.

The passing game just isn’t working for the Eagles, but as long as the offensive line can keep blasting away, and as long as Dillon is controlling the clock and the game, Virginia will be in trouble.

The Cavaliers might have won, but they got run on by UConn several weeks ago and were hit by North Carolina last week for over six yards per carry and 211 yards.

It’s a strong Virginia defensive front, but BC should be able to pound away. However …

One Reason Why Virginia Will Win

Boston College can’t get down right away. While the Eagles showed last week they could come through in a high-scoring firefight, that was an aberration.

They need to control the clock if possible, and that’s not going to happen.

BC used to be all about time of possession, but that hasn’t worked out so hot this year. Meanwhile, Virginia is dominating the clock.

The Cavaliers lead the ACC in pass efficiency defense, and now they’re facing one of the nation’s least effective passing games. With a D that owns third downs, and an offense that’s converting on 46% of its third down chances, the team is fourth in the nation in time of possession.

If Virginia has the ball for 35 minutes, BC doesn’t have a chance.

What’s Going To Happen

BC hasn’t played the same game twice this year – which one will show up?

Virginia will out-Boston College, Boston College.

The Cavaliers will control the clock, it’ll run effectively, and it’ll play the type  of tough defense the Eagles used to crank up. It won’t be anything amazing, and the points and yards aren’t going to fly around, but the Cavaliers will get bowl eligible. They won’t care how it looks.
