What’s Going To Happen
The schedule might stink, but USF is doing exactly what you’re supposed to do against a light slate.
There won’t be enough to make any noise in the College Football Playoff race, but with Tulane, Houston and UCF to play, there’s enough to get past San Diego State in a fight for the New Year’s Six spot.
But the pollsters still like Charlie Strong’s team, and now, with two weeks off, it’s time to unleash the fun again.
It’s also time for Cincinnati’s defense to show up under Luke Fickell.
He was a good choice for the gig and he’s a great defensive mind who’ll turn the program back around, but it’s not working lately with the D breaking down boy in losses to Navy, Marshall and UCF. However, beat USF, and that’s the party starter. That’s the game to take and run with over the back half of the season.
Cincinnati has decent veteran talent on the defensive front, but it’s not stopping the run well enough. That’s a problem against the precision USF attack that hits home runs sort of like an option offense, but with the zone-read getting the backfield stars in the open for gash after gash.
USF has yet to be tested by a decent offense, and it’s not going to happen this week, either. The pass rush will rip through the Bearcat line, Quinton Flowers and the running game will roll, and one of the nation’s most dangerous teams will look the part again.
