It was the CFN mantra from the BCS era, and it still rings true. It’s not about what we believe, it’s about what we can prove.

And we can prove that UCF is far, far more deserving right now of being ranked higher than USF.

And so is San Diego State.

It’s not USF’s fault that everyone on its schedule stinks, but you can’t assume wins when it comes to putting the puzzle pieces together on the wins and losses so far, and you have to go by resumes.

College Football Playoff committee, when that time comes a month from now, if UCF, USF and San Diego State are all unbeaten, this is going to be your test to see if you’re on your game.

So far, USF has beaten San Jose State. It beat Stony Brook, Illinois, Temple and East Carolina, Unfortunately for the Bulls, all five of those teams are bad at college football. Again, it’s not USF’s fault, but blowout wins over bad teams mean next to nothing. If they didn’t, Western Michigan would’ve been in the College Football Playoff last season.

Meanwhile, UCF started out the season with a 61-17 win over a FIU team that’s currently 3-1. Granted, 11 grandmas in wheelchairs would be 3-1 with FIU’s schedule, but it’s still a blowout win for UCF over a three-win team.

Maryland beat Texas on the road, and just beat an undefeated Minnesota team in Minneapolis. UCF beat the Terps 38-10 in College Park. Last weekend, that Memphis team that beat Josh Rosen and UCLA got its clock cleaned by the Knights 40-13.

And yet, UCF – despite the two blowout wins that are a gajillion times better than anything USF has done – is 25h in both the AP and Coaches polls, while USF is 18th in the AP and a ridiculous 16h according to the Coaches.

Fortunately, USF and UCF play late in the year.

Meanwhile, all San Diego State has done is start the season 5-0 with a win over an Arizona State team that beat Oregon – who’s technically 26th in the AP, while ASU didn’t get a vote, but that’s for another time – and with a victory over Stanford.

Again, those are two better wins than anything USF can brag about, but the Aztecs are one spot behind the Bulls in the AP, and 21st according to the Coaches.

It’s okay. Win out, UCF, and you’ll get the New Year’s Six spot from the Group of Five conferences.

But for now, pollsters, take a look at what Scott Frost’s team is doing. It’s okay to mix up your rankings based on what’s actually happening.
