We’re starting a new tradition.

It’s the Halftime Confab.

It’s the midway point of the season and time to engage with the proletariat.

Together, let’s assess various aspects of the first half of the season and let’s take a peek at what’s to come.

READING BETWEEN THE LINES?

From JRFRTR@gmail.com

“I like your stuff sometimes but it seems like you don’t like the SEC?  Is that true?”

JRFRTR – What gives you that impression?

LOVE FOR THE U

From canes97@yahoo.com

“Sullivan – good to see that you seem to think The U and Mark Richt are on the verge of reestablishing the program.  Do you think the Canes can win the ACC and get to the CFP?”

Canes97 – if Mark Richt coached at Georgia back when the SEC was what it has reverted back to (a conference featuring Alabama and some other football teams), he’d have found a way to win the SEC and battle for national championships.

Now, his only real hurdle is Dabo.  Dabo isn’t going to relinquish the crown just yet – but Richt and The U will be back on the grand stage within three years.

YOU FOLKS WANT EVIDENCE OF WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT?

From GoBlue11@gmail.com

“Just read your ridiculous article on the Michigan/MSU game Obviously, you don’t know what you’re talking about.  MSU will never matter. And Harbaugh is going to serve up a giant pile of humble pie for MSU and Dantonio on Saturday night.”

GoBlue11 – thanks for reading. Very nice of you to reach out.  Hope you’re having a splendid week!

GO EASY ON US

From HunterRebs6@gmail.com

“Hey, Sullivan – you have it out for Ole Miss. The NCAA and Houston Nutt went on a witch hunt and have screwed us for a decade. Everyone cheats and it’s guys like you that have led to Ole Miss being penalized unfairly. Players are getting paid at ALL of the SEC programs and everyone was just getting jealous of the Rebs and how they were beating Bama and becoming a power. Stop it with the unfair criticisms of our program. I’ll even host you down here, show you The Grove, let you see how beautiful the people are, and you’ll leave knowing that Ole Miss is a great place!”

HunterRebs6 – I know, I know. It’s my fault.  I’ve also been told that I’m responsible for the many unqualified persons being elected to political office due to my “unnecessary stabs at seriously intelligent and influential people” and that my writing “contributes to the election of legitimate idiots” in other phan male.  That’s an interesting perspective – but I digress.

The University of Mississippi is, I’m sure, a fine place.  And I’m sure that the football program will be back on its knees soon and will return to its familiar mediocre ways within the next 25 years or so.  Other outfits and/or persons that I’ve been skeptical about (probably unfairly) over the years have included Enron, Gary Hart, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, SMU Football, and CCNY Basketball.  As for your kind invitation to join you at The Grove – thank you but I have a prior engagement.

THE CAPTAIN’S FAN CLUB

From mike.boilerup@comcast.net

“In one of your articles, you referred to someone as The Captain From Clarendon Hills and his thoughts on how Purdue is on the rise.  Who is that, where/what is Clarendon Hills, and do you think the Boilers are in the process of becoming a Big Ten power?”

Several good questions there.  I’ll answer each one individually, Mike.

  1. The Captain lurks in the underbelly of our college football world.  He’s well-connected, has more inside scoop on how all of this works than the TV people who yap away all the time, and he’s got his finger on the pulse of the things that matter.
  2. Clarendon Hills can simply be defined as America’s Valhalla and it’s where The Captain gets it done.
  3. I’m bullish on the Boilers.  Within a decade and a half, Purdue will be able to win the Old Oaken Bucket at least 65% of the time.

THE BADGERS PRESENT ME WITH OPPORTINITIES TO SHARE HUMOR

From acooney@yahoo.com

“Your a moran. Wisconsin winning the Playoffs? Are you joking? Their not even going to beat Northwestern. Typical Big Ten team that can’t win the big games.”

Coon-Dawg – thanks very much for your note.  Aside from presenting a well-constructed correspondence, you introduce interesting points. First – yes, I was joking.  I didn’t really mean it when I said that Wisconsin would win the national title.  I just wrote it because I couldn’t think of anything else to write and that sort of seemed like a funny joke to make.

But Wisconsin has won a few football games since then – including against Northwestern.  And while I can appreciate the way people don’t like to give Wisconsin respect, I’m actually really starting to think that I should reconsider my joke and actually go on record with a prediction about Wisconsin winning the national title.

I’m going to give this some more thought – check back in with me after the national championship game has been played and I’ll let you know what my thoughts are then.

YOU FOLKS WANT MORE EVIDENCE OF WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT?

From Leaders&Best776@comcast.net

“You’re a typical Sparty Little Brother, trying your hardest to claim that Sparty registers on Michigan’s radar, trying your hardest to argue that Sparty “measures up” like your smug head coach tries to say, etc. Hope you enjoyed MSU’s very short period of slightly-above-mediocre play these last few years. It’s over for you guys.”

Leader&Best776 – thanks so much for reading and for taking the time to reach out.  Hope you’re having a terrific week!

I MIGHT HAVE OFFERED THOUGHTS & PRAYERS ON GORDIE LOCKBAUM

From dan.slovekny@yahoo.com

“Great weekly column – thanks for the fun perspectives.  But I’ve noticed you never weigh in on the Heisman race. Why no Thoughts & Prayers on players vying for college football’s ultimate award?”

Slovy – thanks for the note and glad that you enjoy the weekly mush.  As for the Heisman race and all of the scuttlebutt – I think that Major League Baseball is pretty smart in the way they do not name the Cy Young Award winner on Labor Day.

Also, as much as I think we need to have far more focus and debate on individuals that are 18, 19, and 20 years old – especially now, when that age group seems to need more positive reinforcement and empowerment –  I like to focus my Thoughts & Prayers on the teams as whole units.  I also like to zero in on the coaches that earn many millions and millions of dollars to teach gym, I mean to coach football.

MAN’S BEST FRIEND – COMING TO A STAGE NEAR YOU SOON

From Andrewdawgs03@gmail.com

“You’ve given a little bit of love to the Georgia Bulldawgs – but, come on!  They deserve far more than a mention here or there!”

Andrewdawgs03 – you’re right.  I’ve started to write a musical all about the 2017 Georgia Bulldawgs that I plan on taking to Broadway.  I have some connections and should get the necessary backing to have the show up and running before Thanksgiving.  So far, the script is writing itself and features lots and lots and lots and lots of references to a team that was good almost forty years ago.

MEET ME AT DREAMLAND, BUBBA!

From BubbaRollTideRoll@gmail.com

“Sully – LOVE the stuff you bring each week. Keep it coming, bro! But you’re saying Bama isn’t #1?? Tell me what’s going to go down in the CFP this year. Thanks”

Bubba RTR – love that you love the stuff.  Here’s the deal – my own thought is that the Champions are the Champions until something tells me they aren’t.  I know this year is not last year – that’s a fair point that some like to make.  But when a National Championship squad continues to crank it and crank it and crank it, they’re telling me they have earned the right to that top spot until they’re not cranking it any more.

Don’t worry, though, Bubba – Bama’s gonna do all it can to convince me that my joke about Wisconsin winning it all is a lousy joke.  And if I come to Tuscaloosa, I’m sitting next to you at Dreamland, Bubba – vittles are on me.

TELL ME WHAT YOU REALLY THINK

From SteveGeauxTigers@yahoo.com

“Do you really think that Coach O is a that bad of a coach?”

SteveGeauxTigers – yes.

BUT IF YOU PEEL AWAY THE VENEER, WHAT DO YOU REALLY THINK?

From WeAreND2005@gmail.com

“How can you honestly rip on Notre Dame the way you do? It’s one of the finest schools in the world and has the best tradition and resume in the history of college football.”

WeAreND2005 – I can honestly rip on Notre Dame the way I do because I have a brain that allows me to think clearly and eyes that allow me to see and read and I have a conscience and other things like that.  Thanks for reading.

APPLE PICKING SEASON

From archielevesque@yahoo.com

“What’s the best game of the second half of the season?”

Archie – that’s easy.  The Apple Cup.  Petersen vs The Pirate for a spot in the Pac 12 Championship game and a trip to the CFP.  The Pirate might suggest that the NCAA force the teams vying for the CFP to square off in a national chess match tournament.  Or maybe he’ll suggest a national Hungry, Hungry Hippos tournament.

YOU FOLKS WANT EVEN MORE EVIDENCE OF WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT?

From DaveTheVictors2008@yahoo.com

“Someone forwarded me your garbage article about Michigan – MSU. I don’t know why but I read it.  That’s the biggest pile of crap I’ve read in as long as I can remember. You’ll be crying with all of the other little bros tonight after you’re put back in your place.”

DaveTheVictors2008 – great to hear from you and thanks for reaching out.  Hope you’re having a lovely week!a
