Yeah, South Carolina is still in the SEC title chase.

If Florida beats Georgia, and when-not-if Kentucky loses once more, the Gamecocks – they still have to play the Gators and Bulldogs – are going to the SEC Championship.

Or, if they lose to Vanderbilt, they’re likely going to limp their way to the finish line with Clemson still to deal with, too.

They play Wofford, so they’re going to get that sixth win and go bowling, but in the second year under Will Muschamp, they’re looking to start becoming the type of program that can hang around in the SEC race deep into November on a regular basis.

But Vanderbilt desperately needs this to keep bowl hopes alive.

The team is a long way from being the one that popped off about how it could show Alabama how to play defense – to loosely paraphrase the rhetoric – and now after losing four straight, it has to win three of the final five games to keep get a nice 13th game vacation.

One Reason Why South Carolina Will Win

The Vanderbilt offense doesn’t really work.

It put up a few points on Ole Miss in the 57-35 loss a few weeks ago, and it’s had a few decent moments here and there, but for the most part, moving the ball at times has been like pulling teeth.

What happened to the running game? It’s not there, only coming up with more than 71 yards against one FBS team – again, Ole Miss.

Where’s Kyle Shurmur and the improved passing attack that hit 200 yards on a regular basis? It’s effective at times, but it’s not enough to overcome the other problems.

This is likely going to be a close game that’ll come down to mistakes. The Vanderbilt defense doesn’t force enough takeaways – only coming up with one fumble recovery on the year – and South Carolina doesn’t give the ball away.

One Reason Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The South Carolina offense doesn’t really work.

Oh sure, Jake Bentley is a playmaker who can keep the chains moving when the team absolutely needs something to happen, but the offense has fallen flat since losing star receiver Deebo Samuel.

And there’s no running game to help the cause.

The Gamecocks have rushed for just 776 yards and five touchdowns on the year, with no breakout games other than the 194-yard performance against Tennessee a few weeks ago.

The Vandy run defense has been gashed so far in the fourth SEC games, but it’s finally about to get a bit of a break.

What’s Going To Happen

South Carolina doesn’t screw up enough for Vanderbilt to win this.

The Gamecocks don’t turn the ball over enough, they don’t commit enough penalties, and they don’t make the big, giant mistakes limited teams like Vandy need to survive.

It’s never going to be a thing of beauty this year when either of these two teams play, but the Gamecocks will be more than happy to take the win.
