San Jose State heads to BYU after much-needed bye week
San Jose State holds the same 1-7 record as BYU
Let’s take a look at Saturday’s game in Provo, Utah
I won’t be at the San Jose State vs. BYU game, but the Spartans are back on the road for a cellar-dweller matchup of two 1-7 teams at LaVell Edwards Stadium Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. MST on BYUtv and ESPN3. The last time these two teams met was in 2015 and BYU edged SJSU 17-16. But the Cougars went 9-4 in both 2015 and 2016.
Let’s take a look back at this summer when I predicted SJSU would edge BYU by a score of 41-38 this year. I said that it was going to be a high scoring game in favor of the Spartans. Most, if not all, readers called me out because BYU was a pretty good team last year. But let’s face it, there aren’t any teams who win (or lose) every year. It’s the sporting life.
Now let’s get back to the informational preview of Saturday’s game.
1-7, 0-4 in Mountain West Conference. SJSU lost to Hawaii, 37-26, on October 14. SJSU is on a six-game losing skid.
1-7. BYU lost to East Carolina, 33-17, on October 7. BYU is on a seven-game losing skid.
SJSU leads the series, 10-7. This year’s game will conclude a home-and-home series that began in San Jose in 2015. BYU emerged with a 17-16 win over SJSU.
SJSU head coach Brent Brennan and BYU head coach Kalani Sitake served as assistant coaches at Oregon State in 2015. Brennan was a wide receivers coach while Sitake pulled double duty as an assistant head coach and a defensive coordinators.
First Team With Eight Games Played
SJSU became the first team among the 129 Football Bowl Subdivision teams to play eight games after finishing their game against Hawaii on October 14. 10 teams have played six games; 84, seven games played; and 35, eight games played so far this season.
13 Game Regular Season Schedule
For the first time since the 2010 season and fifth team in school history, SJSU has a 13 game regular season schedule. SJSU also played 13 regular season games in 1937, 1939 and 2002.
Negative Effects Of Turnovers
So far this season, SJSU’s opponents have turned 26 turnovers (12 interceptions, 14 fumbles) into 103 points. SJSU had two turnovers against Hawaii on October 14.
Heading into the BYU game, 21 freshmen and 13 others played in their first college football game for SJSU. Of the 21 freshmen, seven started at least once for SJSU.
