12. Connecticut Huskies (1-4)

At least there’s an offense this year. The wins aren’t coming, but there’s hope in all the shootouts. The lone victory, though, came against Holy Cross. The only close-call loss came to East Carolina in the fu n 41-38 firefight.

11. East Carolina Pirates (1-5)

A total disaster so far. the Pirates only have the win over the lowly UConn Huskies to show for the first half of the Eason. Including a loss to James Madison to open things up, ECU has been blown away by everyone else.

10. Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-5)

The Golden Hurricane can’t get the season going. The defense is a nightmare against the run, with the only win against Louisiana-Lafayette providing any fun so far. Blowout losses to Navy and Tulane over the last few weeks all but killed any bowl hopes.

9. Temple Owls (3-3)

The American Athletic Conference championship season of last year feels like a long, long time ago. The Owls might be 3-3 with hopes of a bowl season still alive, but the wins came against Villanova, UMass and East Carolina.

8. Cincinnati Bearcats (2-4)

The Luke Fickell era is having a hard time getting going. The only FBS win came against Miami University, but blowout losses to Navy, Marshall and UCF showed how far the Bearcats have to go.

7. Tulane Green Wave (3-2)

The Green Wave offense appears to have found its groove. With wins over Army and Tulsa, now there’s real hope of going bowling. The loss to Navy was in a 23-21 fight, and the other loss was at Oklahoma.

6. SMU Mustangs (4-2)

Finally, this is the team and the season the program has been building towards. The Mustangs might have lost to Houston, but taking care of North Texas, UConn and Arkansas State set the foundation for a bowl campaign.

5. Memphis Tigers (4-1)

The win over UCLA was the high point, the blowout loss to UCF hurts, but at least the team has been a whole lot of fun. There hasn’t been a good win over than beating the Bruins, but the Tigers will be right there in the conference title chase.

4. Navy Midshipmen (5-0)

The Midshipmen are unbeaten and deep in the conference title chase – again. The defense might not be anything special, but Zach Abey and the offense are humming. However, they haven’t faced any of the big boys yet – that’s coming with Memphis and UCF up next.

3. Houston Cougars (4-1)

The offense might not be a fun show like it was over the past few seasons, but the only loss so far came in a 27-24 battle with Texas Tech. Beating Arizona and SMU pumps up the ranking.

2. South Florida Bulls (5-0)

The schedule has been hot garbage, but USF is doing what you’re supposed to against an easy slate. The best win so far was against … uh … Temple? Illinois? Houston and a trip to UCF are coming up later.

1. UCF Knights (4-0)

The Knights got through the hurricane issues and delays to be absolutely amazing so far. No one has come closer than 27 points of the Knights, including Maryland and Memphis. The O is on a roll.
