Uhhhhhhh, Northwestern? When are you going to start the season?

The Wildcats have offensive talent, they have decent defensive playmakers, and they have more than enough experience to be a whole lot better than 2-3.

It’s not just that they’re losing, or that they’re bad. It’s that they’re getting destroyed, with Duke, Wisconsin – a bad final few minutes for the Badgers aside – and Penn State all winning without too much of a struggle.

And now, the season is on life support. Lose this, and even with four of the next five games at home, it’s asking a lot of this bad team to win four of the final six games to go bowling.

Maryland could use this to have any hope of going bowling, too.

It’s 3-2 with wins over Texas and Minnesota on the resume, but it’s probably going to be down to its fourth-string quarterback – more on that in a moment – and it still has to face Wisconsin and Michigan State on the road, and Michigan and Penn State at home. Lose this, and good luck winning three of the last six games.

One Reason Why Northwestern Will Win

Do you want to play quarterback for Maryland?

First, season-starter Tyrrell Pigrome gets knocked out for the year in the opener against Texas, then superstar recruit Kasim Hill suffers a season-ending knee injury, and then – as if the loss to Ohio State wasn’t enough – third-string cult hero Max Bortenschlager left the game with an apparent concussion, although that’s not official.

Bortenschlager’s status is still up in the air, but it’ll likely be up to No. 4 quarterback Caleb Henderson to keep it all going.

While he’s talented – he’s a transfer from North Carolina – he’s just getting into the swing of things after missing time hurt.

Northwestern, it’s time to find a pass rush and tee off.

One Reason Why Maryland Will Win

The Northwestern offensive line has been a total disaster.

It can’t protect Clayton Thorson – and it can’t get the Justin Jackson going.

There’s little to no push for what should be an effective ground game that showed up against Bowling Green, and no one else.

22 yards against Duke. 25 against Wisconsin. 67 against Penn State. The numbers are awful mainly because of the sacks, but the running attack isn’t working, either.

Maryland is 3-0 this year when allowing fewer than 250 yards on the ground, and 0-2 when allowing 250 or more. In those three wins, the Terps gave up under 100 yards.

In Northwestern’s three losses, it failed to hit 100 yards on the ground.

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Maryland defense rally around Henderson?

Don’t be fooled by the fourth-string quarterback distinction. If it’s Henderson, he should be okay. But the difference will be a Terp D that will rise up at home, getting past the problems in Columbus and keep Northwestern’s misery going.
