Finally, Missouri is getting to have a little bit of fun.
The Tigers lost five straight games before finally getting their first win of the year over an FBS team, obliterating Idaho 68-21. Now it gets another relative layup – if all goes well – against UConn to build up the base of wins.
Is it remotely possible to then win three of the final four games against Florida, Tennessee, at Vanderbilt and at Arkansas to go bowling? It’s not a crazy thought.
UConn has picked things up, though, winning two straight with wins over Temple and Tulsa. Head coach Randy Edsall is getting the program to show signs of life again, and now it has dreams of going from dud to bowl eligible.
That’s not going to happen with USF, UCF, and Boston College up next, but beat Mizzou, and it’ll be time to puff out the chest.
One Reason Why Missouri Will Win
For all the problems this year, the passing game has been able to still come through.
There was a dud against Purdue, and it didn’t do what it needed to against Auburn to keep up the pace, but Drew Lock has somewhat quietly had a terrific season, throwing for 2,190 yards and 23 touchdown with just eight picks.
He bombed away in the loss to Georgia, and then hit Idaho with 467 yards and six touchdowns. And now he gets to go crazy on the UConn secondary.
Yeah, the Huskies have been able to win a little lately, but this is still the secondary that got hit by Memphis and Riley Ferguson for eight touchdowns, and allowed teams like Temple and East Carolina to take target practice.
UConn has a pass rush, but that’s the only positive for a defense that doesn’t have the playmakers to keep up.
Get ready for 400 yards of Mizzou passing yards, and …
One Reason Why UConn Will Win
At least 300 from the Huskies.
Bryant Shirreffs has been able to bomb away, too, hitting Tulsa for 372 yards last week for his fourth 300-yard game in the last five.
He threw for over 400 against East Carolina and SMU, and he’s about to start throw and throw some more to try keeping the pace with the Mizzou air show.
The Tiger defense is awful on third downs, allowing teams to hit 50% of their tries. Shirreffs and the UConn offense will keep the chains moving and should be able to put up points in bunches if Mizzou isn’t focused. But …
What’s Going To Happen
It’s Drew Lock vs. the nation’s worst pass defense. Bad things are about to happen to the Huskies.
