Michigan needs to gets its groove back in a big, big hurry.

The College Football Playoff hopes are gone, the Big Ten championship dream is over, and winning a piece of the East is all but out of the question without a major miracle. But this was sort of what Michigan was supposed to be.

The hope was for the Wolverines to reload in a hurry, but now the lack of over 20 starters from the 2016 team appears to be a problem. There’s no consistency on offense, and now, after the nightmare at Penn State, the aura of invincibility around the Michigan defense is gone.

While the Wolverines might be trending down, Rutgers is showing the exact sort of a spark needed to happen in the second year under Chris Ash.

After getting blown out by Ohio State and losing by ten points to Nebraska, the Scarlet Knights needed to start doing something right.

Now, with two straight wins, they’re at least showing hope for the future. Three of the next four games are on the road, but if they can somehow pull this off, a bowl game, shockingly, is in play.

It’s just the fourth meeting between the two – Rutgers won in 2014, and Michigan took the last two.

One Reason Why Michigan Will Win

Forgetting what Penn State was able to do, the Michigan defense really is fantastic.

There’s no explosiveness whatsoever on the Scarlet Knight offense. Outside of one 74-yard Gus Edwards run, Rutgers managed just 56 net rushing yards the rest of the way. With no passing attack to worry about, there’s a good chance a wounded-pride Michigan D shuts down the Rutgers offense to a dead stop.

Even after Penn State, this is still the No. 1 defense in the country at stopping teams down on third down. Against the worst offense in the Big Ten, be stunned if Rutgers gets more than 250 yards of total O.

One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win

The stall ball tactics appear to be working.

Rutgers can’t totally take the air out of the ball – they don’t convert enough third down tries – but the offensive line is doing a solid job, the running game is okay, and the team is okay at controlling the narrative.

For good and for bad, the Scarlet Knights don’t take any chances. The defense is strong enough at rising up on third downs to get off the field, and it’s got just enough production on the line to get behind the line from time to time.

Stop Michigan’s running game, and take your chances against John O’Korn and the passing game. Rutgers can do that.

What’s Going To Happen

78-0.

That’s what Michigan did against Rutgers last year, and this time around the circumstances are vastly different.

Rutgers will have a really, really hard time generating points without a few major breaks, and it’ll get a few.

Michigan will pound away, dominate the field position battle, and get over the Penn State loss with a rough and tough performance on both sides of the ball.

The Wolverine D will look like the Wolverine D again.
