Of course everyone will care about Miami vs. Florida State in the ACC world, but this is bigger – it’s to stay alive in the division race, at least for Louisville.
The Cardinals got over their loss to Clemson with the rebound girl in the bar – Murray State – and now they need to get by the Wolfpack or risk being, effectively, 2.5 games behind the pack with a slew of tough battles to ahead to deal with.
NC State has to keep on showing it’s for real.
The win over Florida State got the Pack back on the map, but the Clemson game is still out there along with dates at Pitt, Wake Forest, and non-conference, sort of – Notre Dame.
But win this, and with the Tigers having to come to Raleigh, the excitement will start to build around a strong, dangerous club.
Or Lamar Jackson will be Lamar Jackson and crush those dreams on national television.
One Reason Why Louisville Will Win
It’s not quite the traveling fun show of last year, but it’s not all that far off.
The Cardinal offense – thanks to Mr. Jackson – hit the 500-yard mark in four of the first five games, with the only time going under it against Clemson with 433.
It’s not always efficient, and there are way too many giveaways, but the Cardinals lead the nation in first downs, Jackson has been great at spreading the passes around no matter who’s catching them – the Cardinals lead the ACC in passing – and the firepower is there to simply crank up the tempo to another level against a shaky State pass defense.
The Wolfpack are dead last in the ACC in pass defense allowing 285 yards per game. No. 8 is about to go off.
One Reason Why NC State Will Win
The giveaways have been an issue for the Cardinals.
They didn’t turn the ball over against North Carolina, and the defense helped pick up the slack with a slew of takeaways against Purdue and Kent State, but the ten turnovers on the season are too many.
That’s nothing new after giving it up 32 times last season, but the Wolfpack are outstanding and owning the mistake side of things with just two turnovers on the year, ranking first in the ACC in turnover margin, and with no picks.
As good as Jackson might be, Ryan Finley is starting to enter into All-ACC quarterback territory with nine touchdowns, no picks, and completing 72% of his passes.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s NC State’s breakthrough moment – even with that win over Florida State.
The Cardinal offense has been terrific, but the Pack defensive front will do just enough to get to Jackson and slow the machine down just enough to let Finley and company be effective for a full four quarters.
Turnovers will matter. State will be a +2, the O will take advantage of the big moments, and the team will get its revenge after last season’s 54-13 embarrassment.
