What’s Going To Happen
Boise State might have made some big noise with its win over San Diego State, and Wyoming is still unbeaten in conference play, but Colorado State – very, very quietly – might just be the Mountain West’s best team.
But the Rams need to show it again after struggling against a mediocre Nevada team.
The schedule isn’t all that bad, and the offense is terrific, but the Rams need to show some positive consistency. But this week, they have to deal with a desperate New Mexico team that knows absolutely nothing about consistent play.
Just when it seemed like the Lobos have things working after beating Tulsa and Air Force, clunk. Fresno State’s 38-0 win over New Mexico was all kinds of ugly, but now it’s time for the response.
The Lobos can’t seem to convert a third down conversion if their season depended on it, and against Colorado State, it just might.
They convert just 27% of their tries – hitting just 2-of-14 and missing both fourth down chances against Fresno State – while Colorado State is No. 1 in the Mountain West and fourth in the nation in third down conversions.
It’s a road game on a Friday night, but the Ram run defense is strong enough to hold down the New Mexico ground attack, and there’s nothing to worry about from the Lobo passing game.
If Colorado State is really that good, it has to take down this game without a problem. But it’s a Friday night, and New Mexico is just flaky enough to make this more of a fight than it should be.
