In a conference full of interesting teams and storylines, Cal and Arizona are quickly turning into two of the league’s most intriguing.

Cal destroyed Washington State with a dominant performance, stuffing Luke Falk and the Cougar offense to a dead stop, and now it’s back in the hunt for a bowl game under first-year head coach Justin Wilcox.

There’s no way the Bears will get into the North race, but at 4-3 with winnable games against Colorado and Oregon State ahead, beat Arizona, and this will almost certainly be a successful 13-game run under the new guy.

Arizona has turned its season around helped by the emergence of QB Khalil Tate, who ran wild over Colorado and UCLA in thrilling wins.

Now at 4-2, and with just one Pac-12 loss, the Wildcats have control over their own Pac-12 destiny, but with Washington State ahead, and road dates at USC, Oregon and Arizona State to deal with, it’ll be tough.

After last year, though, just getting to a bowl game will be a major success.

One Reason Why Arizona Will Win

Can Cal’s defensive front slow down the red-hot Tate and the Arizona offense? Short answer? Maybe, but it’s had a few problems this year.

The Bears held up well against USC – outside of a few big runs – and it was tough in the loss to Washington, but Oregon ran wild, coming up with 328 yards and five scores even after losing QB Justin Hebert.

At the moment, Tate is the hottest quarterback in the country, running past Colorado for 327 yards and four scores, and hitting UCLA for 230 yards and two touchdowns. He’s averaging 16.5 yards per carry hitting home run after home run, and he’s throwing well, too.

Tate connected on 12-of-13 passes for 154 yards and a score against the Buffs, and hit 70% of his throws for 148 yards and a touchdown against the Bruins. It’s all working, and now the Bear linebackers have to figure out how to contain him.

Colorado and UCLA weren’t even close.

One Reason Why California Will Win

Helped just a wee bit by coming up with seven takeaways against Washington State, Cal now leads the nation in forced turnovers.

The Bears only took the ball away once in each of the previous two games, but it came up with three 11 in the first four. That’s what happens when you have an aggressive defensive coordinator in Tim DeRuyter and a defensive-minded head coach in Justin Wilcox – they pitched a gem against Mike Leach and Wazzu.

Arizona hasn’t had too many problems with giveaways, but it turned it over five times in the loss to Utah – it would’ve pulled out the win if the Ute defense didn’t come up with so many big plays.

After coming up with nine sacks and 12 tackles for loss against Washington State, the Cal defensive front will keep attacking.

What’s Going To Happen

The Arizona offense is playing too well.

The defense might be struggling a bit – allowing 960 yards in the last two games – but it hasn’t mattered with Tate running wild.

The Cal defense will have its moments – it’ll get to Tate and keep him from taking off on all the big dashes he did over the last two weeks – but the Rich Rodriguez attack has found its groove.

The Wildcat defense will take the ball away a few times – it’s come up with two takeaways or more in every game but the win over Colorado – and the Bears won’t have the firepower to keep up after getting down early.
