Forgetting that West Virginia lost, it looked great in a whole-lot-of-fun battle with Virginia Tech on a national stage.

Will Grier grew into the quarterback everyone was hoping for, the offense had some fantastic moments, and the defense even did its job on everyone but Hokie QB Josh Jackson.

But now the Mountaineers have to rock.

East Carolina not only lost to an FCS team to open the season, it got blown out.

Granted, James Madison is no ordinary FCS team – we did pick the No. 1 FCS team to win – but after starting out with a 34-14 thud, the Pirates need a big performance.

One Reason Why East Carolina Will Win

Can Thomas Sirk really provide the spark?

Against JMU, the East Carolina offense couldn’t get going, but Duke transfer Thomas Sirk stepped in and ended up looking okay when he wasn’t throwing picks.

He has to get hot right away, and he has to get on the move a little bit to offset the mediocre Pirate running backs. The ECU passing attack has the upside to put on big numbers, but this has to get into a shootout right away, and Sirk has to outplay Grier.

One Reason Why West Virginia Will Win

Cardon Johnson.

East Carolina had a slew of problems against James Madison, but stopping the run was the biggest issue with Johnson running for 265 yards and two scores, including an 85-yarder. Marcus Marshall added a 70-yard rushing dash of his own as the Dukes tore off 422 yards and almost ten yards per carry.

While Grier can run, and his passing will take center stage at times, this is the game for Justin Crawford. If WVU could run for 221 yards and average over six yards per carry against the Virginia Tech defense … uh oh.

What’s Going To Happen

East Carolina will play a wee bit better, and it’s not going to matter.

Grier will be sharp from the start, but the ground game will take over right away as Crawford goes off for a massive day. It’ll be over by halftime.
