It’s the Pac-12 opener for both teams, but it might be an elimination game of sorts.

After a tough start, Oregon State gets Washington up next, and then at USC, and then Colorado, and then Stanford, and then a prayer for something positive.

Washington State survived and overtime thriller against Boise State – the Broncos went Cougar on Wazzu, making a whole slew of questionable mistakes – and while there’s an almost certain win coming up against Nevada, after it’s USC and at Oregon.

If Washington State is going to be any sort of a player in the Pac-12, it has to be good enough to win a game like this with ease. Oregon State has shown nothing whatsoever so far, but with a win in Pullman, the season instantly turns around.

One Reason Why Washington State Will Win

You and a few friends could get a first down on the Oregon State defense.

The Beavers have two massive issues they have to overcome in a hurry. 1) The lose a LOT of fumbles, giving up six so far, and 2) they give up a LOT of first downs, giving away 80 on the year.

Teams are able to move the chains with ease on the OSU defensive front, partly because the run defense is getting barreled over, and partly because there’s nothing whatsoever happening in the backfield. If the defense can’t hurry the Wazzu quarterback and get him out of his rhythm, good luck. But …

One Reason Why Oregon State Will Win

Who will the quarterback be?

Luke Falk is the star of the show, but he was benched against Boise State despite hitting 24-of-34 passes for 193 yards and a pick. Tyler Hillinski came in and threw for 240 yards and three scores on the way to the win, but Falk will get the start against OSU.

Will there be a quick hook if he struggles early on?

Wazzu – as always – is throwing for a ton of yards, but there’s a whole lot of drinking and dunking going on. Against the Broncos, it took 67 passes to get up to 433 yards.

If Oregon State can prevent yards after the catch and keep everything contained after the completion, the defense might be able to bend, but not break.

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State is about to get the offense rolling again – but the points are going to come this week.

The lack of a pass rush will kill the Beavers, while the Cougars will get the running game going a little bit, too. Oregon State will get down fast, QB Jake Luton will throw three picks, and the game will blow open.
