To be really annoying … welcome to the Bronco Bowl.

Because, of course, Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall is going against the Boise State Bronc … sorry.

The two met in Charlottesville in 2015 – Virginia and Boise State, that is – with the guest coming up with a 56-14 whacking. This Cavalier team is better and more entertaining, but with the ACC season starting up next week, it might need this win.

It’s going to be tough for the Cavs to win four of their last eight games to get bowl eligible.

Boise State is coming off a sluggish start to the season and a business-like win over New Mexico, but if it wants to get back into the race for a New Year’s Six slot – which took a hit in a meltdown loss to Washington State – beating a Power Five program is a must.

One Reason Why Virginia Will Win

Can Virginia get the pass rush going?

The Boise State offensive front wasn’t awful against New Mexico, but it’s hardly been a thing of beauty so far. Way too leaky, it’s not doing quite enough for the ground game, and the quarterbacks have been getting popped way too often.

The Cavaliers were solid at getting into the backfield against UConn, and now they need to push from the start. It’s been able to apply pressure and force mistakes – Boise State has been a wee bit turnover-prone at bad times.

One Reason Why Boise State Will Win

Virginia are just okay at running the ball. It’s not great.

It ran for 171 yards and 5.5 yards per pop against the Huskies, but that was a bit of an aberration. The Boise State defensive front was able to hold down the New Mexico ground game – only allowing a few big plays – and it’s not going to get hammered on this week.

Yes, the secondary had problems with Washington State – everyone does – but it’s a good group with a tremendous pass rush. It’s an opportunistic defense that should be able to bother UVA QB Kurt Benkert early on. Expect at least three takeaways.

What’s Going To Happen

Brett Rypien is back at the quarterbacking helm for the Broncos – at least he’s been cleared to play – while Benkert is coming off a 455-yard passing day.

Both defensive fronts will be solid, and neither team will run effectively. The Boise State special teams and pass rush will be stronger than the Cavalier versions, especially in the fourth quarter of a tight battle.
