Utah got the win it really, really wanted to have – with a more dominant 19-13 win over BYU than the final score made it look. However, the offense hasn’t been great, and there are still plenty of things to work out before starting the Pac-12 season next Friday at Arizona.
San Jose State had the bad luck of facing a Texas team looking for something positive after the Maryland debacle. Mountain West play starts next week against Utah State, but first, it needs to generate more of a consistent offense, and it has to hold up defensively for a full four quarters.
Both teams might be trying to get their footing in different ways, and along the way, if San Jose State makes this a fight in any way, be happy it’s not a blowout.
One Reason Why Utah Will Win
San Jose State will throw passes, and Utah will pick them off.
The Spartans have given away four in the first three games and is among the worst teams in the nation in turnover margin. They don’t go on long marches, the defense has a hard time getting off the field, and those interceptions – Utah’s secondary is good at attacking the ball.
The Utes continue to be great at holding on to the tempo and grinding down the clock, and they’re outstanding and coming up with big defensive plays with four picks so far.
They might be trying to do more with a dynamic downfield passing game, but they’re still coached by Kyle Whittingham. They’re still going to do the little things right.
One Reason Why San Jose State Will Win
There’s a chance the Spartans can match Utah punt for punt without losing the field position battle.
The Utah special teams are always solid, and this year is no exception ranking third in the nation averaging 47.8 yards per kick. The Spartan punting game and coverage teams are playing just as well, if not better, with teams averaging negative yards on returns.
SJSU has to get a short field several times to have shots at easy scores – it can’t and won’t go on long scoring marches.
What’s Going To Happen
San Jose State is still going through the learning process. Montel Allen is a young, talented quarterback with upside, the coaching staff is still finding its way, and the playmakers just aren’t there.
More than that, the lines aren’t in place to handle Utah when it starts pounding away. San Jose State will score this week – unlike last week against the Longhorns – but the Utes will hold on to the ball for almost 40 minutes in an easy win.
