There we go. That’s the USF we were all waiting for.
The Bulls were sort of sluggish in their first two games, but last week they came out roaring on the national stage against an Illinois team with a decent enough run defense to have been a whole lot better.
Now they get a chance to try to push aside the crown-holder – at least for now.
An argument could be made that USF was the best team in the American Athletic Conference at the end of last year, but there was one problem with all of that.
Temple beat the Bulls by 16 earlier in the season, and then went on to take the conference title.
This Owl squad isn’t nearly as good as last year’s version but if it can pull this off, another AAC East title will be there for the taking.
One Reason Why Temple Will Win
Yeah, USF is 3-0, but it’s hardly been sharp.
The special teams have been terrible, with bad coverage units and four blocked kicks so far. Throw in a shaky start from the offensive line, and there are holes that still need filling.
Temple has even more problems, but the pass rush isn’t among them. Dominant so far at times, the Owls have cranked up 14 sacks in just three games. That’s part of the reason why the forced errors are coming in waves, taking the ball away eight times so far.
The Owls have a great run defense, and they should win the mistake battle. Do that, and have a chance to pull this off. However …
One Reason Why USF Will Win
Brandon Wimbush and the boys came out roaring against the Owls, putting up 21 first quarter points and running at will.
The Irish quarterback took off for 106 yards and a score – with two touchdown passes – and Josh Adams and Dexter Williams each added 100-yard days for an attack that averaged almost ten yards per carry with 422 yards and five scores.
USF blew up for 376 yards on the ground against Illinois and kicked it into gear with 315 against San Jose State start things out. Temple might have improved over the last few weeks, but there will still be a slew of issues once QB Quinton Flowers gets going.
What’s Going To Happen
Flowers will make amends for a mediocre performance in last year’s loss – the only game under 100 yards rushing over the last eight games of the season. Temple will be game for a while, but the Bulls at home will play inspired football in another impressive nationally televised win.
