Week 3 Five Thoughts: 5) USF, Memphis, SDSU - Game On For The CFP?

Week 3 Five Thoughts
1. Are Miss State & Vandy for real?
2. Did Texas just expose USC?
3. Nebraska could be in big trouble
4. Dreaming of unbeaten Oklahoma & OSU

Just when it seemed like the Group of Five wasn’t planning on showing up this year, we get this past weekend.

South Florida was way too shaky in its first two games against San Jose State and Stony Brook, but then, with a national stage, it pulled off something terrific with a 47-23 domination of Illinois.

Unfortunately, though, that was the one big game against a Power Five program – and Illinois isn’t all that great at college football.

It’s not like Houston beating Oklahoma and Louisville last year – the resume simply won’t be strong enough for the Bulls to think about the CFP if they go 13-0.

However, to get there, they’ll have to play Houston on October 28th, and they might have to deal with Memphis in the American Athletic title game.

The Tigers won their one game they absolutely had to take down against UCLA at home, but now they need the Bruins to be terrific to make this matter. While MU has to go to Houston and UCF – win those, and the resume looks great – there aren’t enough wow games left to be played for the CFP.

And that’s where San Diego State comes into the discussion.

If we’re all supposed to gush over USC battering the Cardinal, then what does it say for SDSU that it pounded its way to a 20-17 win over a team that still might be good enough to win the Pac-12 title? Throw in the win over Arizona State, and welcome to two wins over Power Five teams.

But that won’t be enough.

Beating Air Force and Boise State would be nice, but in the College Football Playoff world, there’s still a hard wall that’ll be hit when it comes to schedule analysis.

So far now, just a few weeks into the season, don’t worry so much about the GOF to CFP idea – the schedules just won’t work.

But the race for the automatic New Year’s Six spot should be fantastic.
