Can Syracuse get this back on track in a hurry?

The Orange started out the season just fine, but that was against Central Connecticut State. And then came last week, when all of a sudden, the offense couldn’t get the job done at home against Middle Tennessee.

So with at LSU, at NC State, Pitt, Clemson, at Miami, and at Florida State up next, to go along with another trip at Louisville, lose this week, and the season is over.

Central Michigan is coming off a blowout over Kansas, but that was the first of four road games in five dates and six in eight.

The talent is there on the Chippewas to make a whole lot of noise in MAC play, but it’s got a nasty schedule of its own. Beat Syracuse, though, and all of a sudden, CMU could really turn into this year’s WMU.

One Reason Why Central Michigan Will Win

Now that’s the Shane Morris Michigan fans were hoping for.

The one-time super-recruit didn’t work out for the Wolverines, but he showed huge against Kansas, ripping apart the Jayhawks with five touchdowns passes and 467 yards.

Mark Chapman caught eight passes for 168 yards and three scores, Corey Willis caught eight balls for 140 yards and a touchdown – but got hurt – and everything else worked, too, starting with a brilliant second quarter from Morris.

Defense has always been optional under Syracuse head coach Dino Babers, and while Middle Tennessee didn’t go off, QB Brent Stockstill came through when he had to with a big fourth quarter for the win.

Morris has to bomb away.

One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win

Central Michigan doesn’t have much of a pass defense, either.

There’s experience, and there are a few nice players, but the Chippewas can be bombed on. Kansas QB Peyton Bender threw for 323 yards, and while he gave up two picks, CMU was hit hard through the air.

Coming off a rough performance, Syracuse star Eric Dungey ran for a team-high 53 yards with a touchdown, but he only threw for 180 yards with a pick. That was an aberration – he and this offense can crank it up for 400 yards through the air if everything is clicking.

The CMU pass rush is just okay – Dungey should have time to work.

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse will find its groove again for one more week, and then the hammer drops with the brutal rest of the slate.

Morris will be fine, but the Syracuse defense will be just good enough at home to keep down the offense that rolled through Kansas last week.

The Chippewas will battle hard and keep this close, but in desperation mode and with the pressure on, the Orange will come up with a better game than they did against the Blue Raiders.
