Alright, San Diego State. Are you ready to be the star Group of Five program?
This isn’t as good an Aztec team as the ones that took home the last two Mountain West championships, but it’s in a position to change that if it can take down its second straight win over a Pac-12 team.
The Aztecs rumbled over Arizona State last week on the road, and now they get the Cardinal in their house. If they’re good enough to win this, they’re good enough to run the table, with the date at Air Force the only road game left worth worrying about.
Stanford has to gear it back up – and fast.
The Cardinals were run over, thrown past, and ripped up in a humbling 42-24 loss to USC. With just three road games remaining, the schedule is favorable after this. But it’s going to be a fight – San Diego State is good enough to pull this off.
One Reason Why San Diego State Will Win
Rashaad Penny has been special.
Stanford might be good enough defensively to concentrate on just one guy, but everyone tries to stop Penny, and it doesn’t work.
He’s averaging 10.6 yards per carry, proving to be the type of back to work the entire offense around after destroying Arizona State for 216 yards and a score, catching a touchdown pass, and returning a kickoff for a touchdown.
Defensively, it’s San Diego State. It’s always going to be in the backfield, and it’s always going to be strong against the run, allowing just over 50 rushing yards per game so far.
One Reason Why Stanford Will Win
Yeah, San Diego State looked great against Arizona State. Arizona State isn’t very good at college football.
Forget about what happened against USC; this is still a physical Cardinal team that can out-San Diego State, San Diego State.
Stanford will grind out the running game, it’ll get behind the line defensively, and it’ll control the tempo and the time of possession. Again, that all didn’t happen against USC – that skews the stats – but the Cardinal still haven’t turned the ball over, Bryce Love ran for 160 yards and a score, and the talent is still there to potentially win the Pac-12.
What’s Going To Happen
San Diego State will come up with a good defensive performance to stay in the game for a full sixty minutes, but Stanford will do just a little bit more of the same things the Aztecs do.
Keller Chryst and the Cardinal passing game will be fine, Love will run well enough to keep the Aztecs off the field, and the secondary will dominate a mediocre SDSU passing attack.
