San Jose State drops road game to Utah
The Utes offense was just too much for the Spartans
San Jose State unable to keep up with Utah’s offense.
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The San Jose State Spartans dropped their second straight road game in a 54-16 loss to the Utah Utes at Rice-Eccles Stadium Saturday night.
Utah won the coin toss and got the ball first.
The ball sailed all the way into the end zone. As a result, Utah started on the 25, but they were stopped on the third down and ended up settling for a field goal. It was 3-0 Utes at 11:35 of the first quarter.
Matt Gay kicked a 56-yard field goal to put the Utes up 6-0 with 8:05 left in the first quarter. With the field goal, Gay was 9-9 on the season.
San Jose State recovered a Tyler Huntley fumble on the Utah 15-yard line and kicked in a field goal to cut the lead in half, 6-3, with 5:07 left in the first quarter. After that, a five-yard sack led to an unsuccessful third down attempt, which prompted the Utes to punt.
Utah settled for another field goal to snatch a 9-3 lead with 1:36 left in the first quarter. The Utes held a 9-3 lead over the Spartans after the first quarter.
The Utes added to their lead when Darren Carrington II ran seven yards for a touchdown, giving the Utes a 16-3 lead at 13:44 left of the second quarter.
Carrington II scored his second touchdown of the game on a 26-yard pass from Tyler Huntley to put the Utes ahead 23-3 with 6:34 left in the second quarter. For the game Carrington II ended up with 9 receptions for 153 yards and three touchdowns.
Zack Moss scored a five-yard touchdown to extend the Utes’ lead to 30-3 with 3:32 left in the second quarter.
Brandon Crawford kicked a good 51-yard field goal with 1:08 left in the second quarter, but San Jose State continued to trail Utah 30-6.
The Spartans had to go back to quarterback Josh Love who replaced Montel Aaron who left the game with a knee injury. He was spotted on the sidelines with his right knee wrapped in ice and on crutches.
San Jose State took advantage of a Utah turnover and cut the lead to 30-13 with 46 seconds left in the second quarter. Love threw a complete pass to Bailey Gaither, who ran for a 47-yard touchdown. The drive was two plays and 47 yards in a span of 14 seconds.
That was pretty much all of offense that the Spartans would have as they would trail the Utes 30-13 at the half.
In the second half the Utes Huntley found Raelon Singleton for a 13-yard touchdown, expanding their lead to 37-13 with 2:36 left in the third quarter.
Utah had a 37-13 lead over San Jose State after three quarters.
San Jose State added another field goal off a 38-yard kick by Crawford, but still trailed Utah 37-16 at 14:20 of the fourth quarter.
Hundley threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Carrington II. Utah stretched its lead to 44-16 at 11:21 of the fourth quarter.
Gay made a 20-yard field goal, increasing Utah’s lead to 47-16 lead with 3:48 left in the fourth quarter.
Devonta’e Henry-Cole netted a 10-yard touchdown to lengthen Utah’s lead to 54-16 with 58 seconds left in regulation.
The Utes (3-0) had Saturday’s game from start to finish to cap a 54-16 victory over the Spartans (1-3).
The Spartans return to CEFCU Stadium to host the Utah State Aggies next Saturday. Game time is 4:30 p.m. PST on FCBK.
