Can the young Aztecs pull off a winning season?

San Diego State football head coach Rocky Long spoke with the Mighty1090 AM on Tuesday morning about this upcoming season and the Aztecs’ home opener against UC Davis this Saturday.

Here is what Long said when asked about his preparation for this Saturday:

“The real concern is that we are young and we cannot put the game plan in. So, at least early in the game we will playing vanilla on both offense and defense [and] not taking too many chances until we figure out what they are trying to do on offense and defense. And then we will try to get into our gameplan based on what we see and hopefully our freshmen on both side of the ball will play well enough for us to win.”

Later on in the interview, Long stated that he will start two true freshmen at safety named Darren Hall and Tariq Thompson this season.

In addition, the Aztecs’ offensive line will add four new faces to the lineup. Long stated that running back and tight end will be some of their strongest positions this season.

Long ended the interview with 1090AM speaking about his team’s experience level:

“I just think the experience factor is questionable and has got me real nervous, but I’d rather have talented guys than experienced guys that can’t play.”
