It might not be the sexiest of national matchups late on a Saturday night, but it’ll be very, very interesting.

These two have been good stories over the early part of the season, and they’re each going to be a thorn in the sides of their respective conferences as league play kicks in.

Ole Miss is fighting on even with no bowl to play for and with the issues from the Hugh Freeze era continuing to be a problem.

The Rebels are 2-0 helped by their fabulous QB Shea Patterson, who in the Year of the NFL Quarterback might just be the next big college football thing.

However, with road games at Alabama and Auburn up next, reality is about to slam down hard on the Ole Miss campaign.

Speaking of having to deal with the real world, with USC, at Oregon, and at Washington up next, Cal needs this win, too.

The Bears shocked North Carolina to start the season, but needed a late rally to avoid an upset at home to Weber State. 2-0 under new head man Justin Wilcox,  a bowl game is possible if they can get by Ole Miss. Lose, and it’ll be an uphill fight.

One Reason Why Ole Miss Will Win

Patterson is really, really good.

He’s not all that huge, but he’s built a bit like Aaron Rodgers – with a lot of the same pure passing skills.

Amazing over the final three games of last season when he stepped in for an injured Chad Kelly, Patterson started out this year on fire, hitting 80% of his passes for 429 yards and four scores against South Alabama, and then teeing off on UT Martin for 489 yards and five scores.

And the Cal secondary? Weber State’s Stefan Cantwell threw for 431 yards last week.

One Reason Why Cal Will Win

Cal might have figured out how to crank up the running game to go along with its normally amazing passing attack.

The new coaching staff seems to be making a thing out of being adaptable, with no one style for an opposing team to be able to focus on.

So far, new starting QB Ross Bowers has been good enough, coming through when needed over the first two games, but the rise of Patrick Laird last week – with 191 yards and three scores against Weber State – to go along with the other talented rushing options should make a bit of a difference.

What’s Going To Happen

At home, Cal will win the turnover battle, and it’ll get into the backfield just enough to bother Patterson.

Ole Miss has just one takeaway in the first two games, while Wilcox – a star defensive coordinator by trade – has his Bears attacking the ball, coming up with six takeaways so far.

It’ll be an interesting 60-minute fight, with Bowers and the Bears surviving another big day from Patterson.
