The smart teams are going at it, with Northwestern winning the last three games in the series including to wins over the last two years.
But now the two teams might be even better than they were last year, and now the stakes might be raised a bit higher.
Northwestern had to struggle to get by Nevada, but it has the talent and upside to make this a big season. If you want your sleeper in the Big Ten West race, as long as QB Clayton Thorson and RB Justin Jackson are healthy, this is it.
Meanwhile, Duke did what it was supposed to do in a blasting of NC Central. The offense was dominant, the defense got off the field fast of the O could do even more, and everything looked great to get ready for the real season to kick in.
One Reason Why Duke Will Win
Can the offense maintain the same efficiency and effectiveness?
Nevada was able to move well on the Wildcats, but it’s still trying to figure out how to get the new-look attack going. Duke should be as finely-tuned as it’s going to be, with Daniel Jones completing 19-of-25 passes for 213 yards and two scores with a running score. He was taking target practice, which was exactly why you schedule an NC Central to start the season.
Northwestern did everything right, and it still needed a fourth down play for a score to put the Wolf Pack away. Northwestern might be able to do everything right this week, and it could still lose the firefight on the road.
This is a far, far better Duke team than the one that lost 24-13 last year in Evanston.
One Reason Why Northwestern Will Win
Thorson is the real deal.
On from the start, he’s looking and playing more and more like a dangerous pro prospect completing 28-of-38 passes for 352 yards and two scores with a pick, while running for two short scores to help put the game away.
Throw in the tough running day from Justin Jackson – he took off for 109 yards – and the Wildcat offense worked, and should again.
Can NU handle the mobile and dangerous Jones? The Wildcat linebackers are just good enough to keep him contained. If Duke doesn’t have the balance with the ground game working, and if Jones has to throw to win to keep up, Duke loses.
What’s Going To Happen
Northwestern will come through late to pull off yet another interesting game.
These two will trade shots back and forth with several mood swings and moments breaks, but the Wildcats will hold on to the ball and the clock just long enough to keep Jones on the sidelines.
Winning the time of possession battle will matter.
