The San Diego State Aztecs pulls off 30-20 road upset against the Arizona State Sun Devils despite being +3 underdogs by kickoff
The gritty little San Diego State Aztecs knew they had a shot coming into Saturday night’s game. A week prior the Arizona State Sun Devils allowed the New Mexico State Aggies to stay in the game late into the fourth quarter.
The Sun Devils were favored by 26 points and came out scathed with a 37-31 victory. The media had been dragging them for a week. The Sun Devils were indeed vulnerable to an upset by a Group of 5 team, so it had to be on every Aztec mind that they were capable of crashing Arizona State’s party.
From beginning to the end of Saturday night, Rashaad Penny was the ultimate party crasher. The San Diego State back replayed his collegiate highlight reel for the home crowd.
Penny finished with 353 all-purpose yards with a running touchdown, receiving touchdown, and a kickoff return touchdown. Despite stacking the box to stop him, the Arizona State Sun Devils could not figure out how to contain Penny. They did not force Christian Chapman beat them. Chapman’s stats show for it completing 9 of 19 for 73 total yards and 1 touchdown with 33 of those passing yards came from a Penny outlet pass for a touchdown.
The Aztecs knew their formula for victory: run the ball, force turnovers. The Aztecs running backs ran the ball for 279 yards with a time of possession at 31:43. They converted 7 of 15 third downs. They were absolutely dominant against the Arizona State defense. To add to Rocky Long’s delight they ended up +1 on turnovers because of aggressive defensive lineman Noble Hall who stripped Arizona State quarterback Manny Wilkins.
Despite holding on to the lead since the 2nd quarter, San Diego State was still making mistakes. The Sun Devils put up 298 yards of passing on San Diego State’ freshman corners. The Aztecs committed 12 penalties costing 95 total yards notably a pass interference call got a Christian Chapman touchdown pass called back.
After Saturday’s victory, the San Diego State Aztecs are now 2-0 for the season and have broken a road losing streak to Pac-12 opponents which date back to a 1975 victory against Oregon State. Since losing to Cal in 2015, the Aztecs have turned their fortune are now 2-0 against Pac-12 opponents. Looking ahead, the Aztecs host Stanford which was handed a loss by the USC Trojans, 42-24.
