The New Year’s Six bowl slot from the Group of Five programs appears to be there for the taking.
It’s only Week 2, but where’s the GOF superstar? With South Florida sputtering, and most of the other bigger-name programs dealing with big games ahead, there might be an opening if Louisiana Tech can quickly look the part.
There’s this, and there’s a trip to South Carolina in a few weeks, but that’s about it. Win those two, and then the big-ticket game might be there for the taking.
Meanwhile, with the SEC West not looking all that bad in Week One – and potentially being back to its normally-high level – Mississippi State could end up scratching and clawing to get to six wins and a bowl game.
Lose to Louisiana Tech, and with LSU, at Georgia, and at Auburn up next, it could be uh-oh time.
One Reason Why Louisiana Tech Will Win
Mississippi State’s defense might have looked terrific against Charleston Southern, but Louisiana Tech will bring a little more firepower.
The machine is back up and humming again – it at least looked that way after the layup game.
The Bulldogs needed a warm-up to deal with the overhaul of offensive stars, and while J’Mar Smith wasn’t always accurate, he ran well and bombed away. Throw in the running of Jarred Craft, and after a few rocky moments, the O worked.
One Reason Why Mississippi State Will Win
But the defense really did play well.
The Bulldog defensive front was a brick wall against everything the painfully overmatched Charleston Southern offense tried to do. Of course, that’s how this was supposed to work, but against a Louisiana Tech offense that needs to give J’Mar Smith time to operate, watch out.
Jeffery Simmons destroyed the Buccaneer offense with seven tackles and a sack, and now he’ll lead a run defense that might just be the real deal.
Come up with third down stops, get Nick Fitzgerald going after he got back in the swing of things with 239 passing yards and two scores, and 41 yards and a rushing touchdown, and Miss State should survive.
What’s Going To Happen
Cowbell will get out alive.
Louisiana Tech has the dangerous offense to keep up for a full sixty minutes, and Smith will keep pressing, but Simmons and the MSU D will be on display.
Fitzgerald will go back to running more after getting just seven carries, but this will be the game that shows just how complete the 2017 Bulldogs are.
