Is Purdue really ready to put on the B1G boy pants?
Long the Big Ten’s equivalent of an open date, Purdue has suddenly changed around the entire outlook of the program with new head coach Jeff Brohm pulling off two restaurant quality wins.
Yeah, the Boilermakers lost to Louisville, but they weren’t awful.
Yeah, it’s only Ohio, but the Bobcats just whacked around Kansas and will probably win the East.
Yeah, Missouri is awful, but this is still Purdue, and it just went on the road to an SEC house and won 35-3.
But it’s all relative.
Purdue has actually been just okay, but it’s being hailed like it’s on the cusp of going to the College Football Playoff. Michigan has been terrific, but there are, apparently, problems.
Issues against Air Force? Yeah, but that Falcon team isn’t all that bad, and the Wolverines still won by 16.
Remember, this is supposed to be a massive reloading project, and the Wolverines are 3-0 with three double-digit wins.
But now they actually have to go to West Lafayette and try.
One Reason Why Purdue Will Win
As the line goes, there are two things that won’t last long in this world, and that’s dogs chasing cars and pros putting for pars.
Add to that teams that kick field goals after getting into the red zone.
On the plus side, Michigan fans should be excited that their team won in three blowouts in games that could’ve been a whole lot uglier. On the other side, eventually, the offense that’s bogging down could be a problem.
Michigan settled for four field goals without a touchdown after getting inside the 20 four times. And now, on the year, the O has moved into the red zone ten times with eight field goals and just one touchdown.
So far, Purdue hasn’t been bad when it comes to red zone defense, but more than that, Brohm’s offense has been able to control the ball and the clock.
Grind down the game, make Michigan take chances, and hope it screws up when it moves the ball.
One Reason Why Michigan Will Win
Purdue won’t run the ball a lick.
Air Force ran the ball for 168 yards last week, but that’s Air Force – it put up 473 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground in the opener against VMI.
This Michigan defensive front isn’t allowing anything to happen against mediocre ground games, and that’s exactly what Purdue has.
So that means it’s going to be up to the passing combination of David Blough and Elijah Sindelar to get the offense moving. And while David Blough and Elijah Sindelar have been effective so far, against this Wolverine defense, David Blough and Elijah Sindelar will throw interceptions.
Again, Purdue has lived off of time of possession and keeping its defense off the field, but the Michigan D has been fantastic on third downs. If the Wolverines can do some grinding of their own – RB Ty Isaac is expected to play after getting dinged against Air Force – then Purdue will have to throw, and then bad things will happen.
What’s Going To Happen
Reality time is about to kick in.
Purdue really is a whole lot better, and Michigan has been a wee bit shaky, but when that Wolverine offensive machine starts tuning things up a little bit – which might be an issue with top WR Tarik Black out – watch out.
The Michigan defense will be the star, putting the offense in great position to kick a whole lot of field goals. Purdue will still hang around in the second half, but only because the Wolverine offense will stall just a wee bit at times.
