1999. Mississippi State has beaten LSU just once since pulling off a 17-16 win way back in the day, and now it has a real shot to make some noise in the SEC world by cowbelling up at home.
It’s been a dominant run so far on both sides of the ball, blowing away Charleston Southern and Louisiana Tech by a combined score of 106 to 21, with everything clicking just fine.
LSU, though, is looking more and more like the possible second-best team in the conference.
Even with a few suspensions, and without star DE Arden Key, the Tigers have been amazing in the first two weeks, especially on the defensive side. This is their only road game until going to Florida in early October. Win this, and with Syracuse and Troy up next, they’re 5-0 before heading to Gainesville.
One Reason Why LSU Will Win
The defense has been absolutely stifling so far, and now Mr. Key is back to help the cause.
The Tigers didn’t allow BYU to do anything in an amazing shutdown performance, allowing just 339 yards of total offense over the first two games.
How do you beat a jacked up team like Mississippi State on the road? You place an air-tight game. So far, LSU has yet to turn the ball over, has taken the air out of the ball on time of possession, and leads the nation after two games in run defense.
The speed and athleticism might be just enough to keep MSU QB Nick Fitzgerald from being Nick Fitzgerald.
One Reason Why Mississippi State Will Win
The LSU 2-0 start might be a bit of a mirage.
It’s possible that BYU is just plain awful, and beating UT Chattanooga is no big deal. Mississippi State hasn’t beaten anyone all that great, but in the tune-ups, it’s been fantastic, especially on the O line – this could be when the LSU defense has to prove it can play.
Even with Fitzgerald running around, MSU has yet to allow a sack in its first two games, the run defense has been fantastic, and the secondary was terrific last week against J’Mar Smith and the Louisiana Tech passing game.
Everyone is talking about the LSU defense, but the other one could be better – at least this week.
What’s Going To Happen
How did Fitzgerald do in last year’s tough 23-20 loss to the Tigers? He was held to 13 rushing yards on 13 carries. Expect more of the same, but don’t expect LSU star RB Derrius Guice to go off, either.
It’ll be a rocky game with several mood swings and great defensive performances, but LSU will be a little tighter, a little tougher, and a little better. Just when it seems like the Bulldogs are about to do something big, they won’t.
It won’t be an impressive victory, but LSU will take it.
