Can Kansas really be 2-0?
Is this really going to be the time when the Kansas Jayhawks, after so much pain and misery, are going to start looking and playing like they might be more than just Big 12 roadkill?
Can Central Michigan rise up and play the part of a top MAC team that could become a threat to win its conference title?
It didn’t play like it against Rhode Island to start the season, but this is a veteran team with a whole boatload of Group of Five talent – it can win this.
Do it, and the season kickstarts for the Chippewas. Win this, Kansas, and twozie up on the MAC with a win at Ohio next week, and the David Beaty era is finally off and running.
One Reason Why Central Michigan Will Win
It was a rough day for the CMU pass defense against Rhode Island, but the team came through with a few clutch plays to get out alive in overtime.
It’s battle tested.
Former Michigan superstar recruit Shane Morris threw for 226 yards and a score in an okay day, but the running game was excellent, with Jonathan Ward and Devon Spalding providing a good 1-2 rushing punch.
Yeah, the Kansas run defense looked like Alabama against SE Missouri State, but it’s about to get hit hard. Meanwhile, the Jayhawks ground game went nowhere .. against SE Missouri State.
One Reason Why Kansas Will Win
The Jayhawks might have finally figured out their quarterback situation.
It only took a few years, but the team finally might have its guy after cycling through option after option after option.
Peyton Bender bombed away for 364 yards and four scores – and two picks – and while it might only have been against SEMO, it was a good first look in the ramped up offense under coordinator Doug Meacham.
Steven Sims caught four passes for 142 yards and two scores, the passing game exploded when it needed to, and it all worked out just fine.
CMU is about to get hit for over 300 yards through the air.
What’s Going To Happen
How real was that close call for CMU? The defense forced six Rhode Island turnovers, but the offense gave away four of its own. But lost in all the sloppiness – there were a ton of penalties, too – was that it was a tune-up. This is a better Chippewa team than this.
Kansas is better, the offense is better, and there will be a few wins along the way this season, but Central Michigan is about to pull out a huge win by outbombing the Jayhawks.
CMU will come up with over 500 yards of total offense to offset a huge game from Bender.
