Who can get over the disappointment faster?
Iowa had Penn State. It had the game won. It had the wonderful moment that was about to resonate throughout the college football world and in the history of Hawkeye football.
And then Trace McSorley happened, and Iowa people were sad in a 21-19 loss.
While that was going on in Iowa City, Michigan State was busy getting run over by Notre Dame in a 38-18 loss that wasn’t even as close as the final score.
So now the rematch of the 2016 Big Ten Championship becomes a huge moment in the conference race.
If Iowa loses, that’s about it with Ohio State and Wisconsin still to deal with.
If Michigan State loses a second straight home game, there will be the oh-no-its-happening-again concern with three road games in the next four, starting with Michigan next week.
One Reason Why Michigan State Will Win
The Spartans have their quarterback.
Notre Dame is going to run wild on just about everyone – there’s no reason to get into too much of a twist over not being able to halt the devastating ground game last week – but on the plus side, Brian Lewerke put up a decent day.
Granted, a lot of the numbers were too late in the process, but the sophomore threw for 340 yards and two scores. On the year, he’s hit 63% of his throws with six touchdowns and two picks, and has shown a little mobility, too.
The Iowa defense did a lot of bending but not breaking against Penn State – until the end. Trace McSorley ended up throwing for 284 yards with a game-winning touchdown on 48 throws. Now Lewerke will do the same to balance things out when LJ Scott isn’t pounding away.
One Reason Why Iowa Will Win
Give Akrum Wadley the ball and keep giving him the ball.
Michigan State came up with a few stops against the Notre Dame ground attack, but four players on the Irish ran for 35 yards or more with 182 total yards and three touchdowns.
Wadley was a bit banged up, but he came up with the big plays needed to come through against Penn State – the defense couldn’t come up with that one big stop.
He’s the home run hitter, and Iowa has to try to get him into space early with the chance to make something happen. If he can get going early, and if QB Nathan Stanley can be mistake-free like he was against Penn State, the Hawkeyes have a shot.
What’s Going To Happen
Michigan State is going to bounce back, but it’s going to be a tough fight to get through.
The Spartans have to win the turnover margin – or not be awful at it – and the secondary has to be a rock and get off the field. Both will happen.
It’s not that Iowa won’t be able to get up for the game after what happened against the Nittany Lions, but it’s going to struggle.
MSU will contain Wadley, and Stanley won’t be able to outplay Lewerke.
