Broadcast, TV, Game Time

Game Time: 7:00 pm ET
Venue: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL
With all of the nightmares going on throughout Florida, the game is still on at USF, with head coach Charlie Strong making a point to say that he’s hoping this will give everyone in the area a break for a little while.
The Bulls were a wee bit rocky in their first two games, and then saw their American Athletic opener against UConn get cancelled thanks to Irma.
Illinois hasn’t been outstanding, but it held on to beat Ball State, and came up with a great performance to get by WKU with a fantastic defensive day.
And now Lovie Smith returns to the Tampa area – he coached the Buccaneers before taking over the Illinois job – while this might just be USF’s biggest and most important game until facing Houston in early November.
One Reason Why Illinois Will Win
The run defense is coming off a clinic.
WKU tried winging the ball around against the Fighting Illini – throwing it 43 times. Why? The ground game went nowhere, with Illinois stuffing the Hilltoppers for just six net yards and a late oh-by-the-way touchdown.
There weren’t a whole slew of big plays in the backfield by an Illinois run defense that held its own up front for a full sixty minutes. The linebackers were outstanding, there was nothing happening on the outside,
USF’s line hasn’t been all that great at keeping defenses out of the backfield, allowing 22 tackles for loss so far. Illinois will attack from the start.
One Reason Why USF Will Win
Beyond the emotion of the moment and the excitement to try making something magical happen under the circumstances, the offense might just be too good no matter how good the Illini run defense is.
The USF defense has been just good enough to hold serve, and this week, it won’t have to worry too much about Illinois bombing away. Chayce Crouch had a solid first week, but he struggled to make anything happen down the field against WKU, throwing for just 107 yards with a pick.
This is going to come down to the running games, and USF’s is far better.
What’s Going To Happen
The Illinois defense will be up to the task to keep Quinton Flowers and the USF running game from going off, but it won’t be able to stop the O cold.
Flowers will be just effective enough to get through a good second half with both teams having their chances. Illinois will will have the ball late with a chance to pull off the win, but will stall.
