Really? Is Mississippi State about to rise up and become the second-best team in the SEC?

The Bulldogs came up with one of the most shocking wins of the 2017 season so far with a 37-7 domination of LSU. That was good, but beating the SEC East’s Bulldogs on the road would be even more amazing because now the pressure is on.

Georgia did its part with a strong win over an amped up Notre Dame team, but with road games against Tennessee and Vanderbilt up next, and only one home date between this and November 4th, this is a bigger than its SEC opener.

Can this be when Georgia shows that it’s the dominant star of the East? Will this be when Mississippi State QB Nick Fitzgerald makes a massive statement in the Heisman chase? All of a sudden, this is one of the biggest SEC games of the year.

And with a massive upset – Miss State gets Alabama in Stark Vegas – this might just be a preview of the 2017 SEC Championship.

The two haven’t played since 2011, and they’ve only faced off 23 times overall with Mississippi State winning just once since 1974.

One Reason Why Georgia Will Win

The Georgia defensive front isn’t going to let the other Bulldogs do much of anything on the ground.

Notre Dame has been explosive against everyone else so far, but only managed 55 yards against Georgia – QB Brandon Wimbush couldn’t get going. With the ability to get behind the line – UGA has 22 tackles for loss in the three games – the Dawgs should be able to bother Fitzgerald from the start.

Offensively, this is when the Georgia ground game needs to force several third-and-shorts. LSU’s Derrius Guice averaged over five yards per carry and Darrel Williams and Derrick Dillon combined to average six yards per pop. LSU didn’t run enough – that won’t be a problem for Georgia.

One Reason Why Mississippi State Will Win

Speaking of strong run defenses, LSU stuffed BYU for -5 yards in the opener, and allowed just 68 yards despite going through the motions against Chattanooga.

Mississippi State rolled for 285 yards and two scores helped by a fantastic day from the offensive front.

The Bulldogs are keeping Fitzgerald clean – allowing just one sack so far – while paving the way for big yards in the first three games. Pound away, go on long scoring drives, play great defense – it’s been an easy and effective formula.

What’s Going To Happen

This is where the youth at quarterback will make a difference.

Jake Fromm has been fine so far, but against a MSU team that’ll load up to stop the run, the passing game will have to click.

It won’t – at least not enough.

Fitzgerald won’t go off, but he’ll make the veteran plays needed in the fourth to keep two key scoring drives alive. The Cowbell Bulldogs will pull this off in a thriller that’ll feel like a special battle from the start.
