Alabama is the No. 1 team in the country.

At the moment, with dominant blowouts over Florida State and Vanderbilt, and with the talent in place, it has to be.

But now, after doing this to Mississippi State, Georgia should probably be No. 2

Appalachian State wasn’t a bad opening opponent, and now, with what the Irish did at Michigan State, getting out of South Bend with a tight win looks terrific.

Blowing out a red-hot Mississippi State team isn’t bad, either.

The Dawgs came in with an attitude from the very start, with the trick play for a touchdown that not only set the tone, but were enough to win less than three minutes into the game.

Everything worked perfectly.

Jake Fromm hit an efficient 9-of-12 passes for 201 yards and two scores, Nick Chubb ran for two touchdowns, and the defense stuffed Nick Fitzgerald and the Bulldog offense to a dead-cold stop.

The defense is playing as well as any in the country, the team played without fear, and now, if Fromm can keep being solid, there’s no reason to believe the Dawgs can’t just win the SEC East, but also have an honest shot at Alabama.

It’s still early, but this might just be the Georgia team that can finally break through and be truly special.

But for right now, being in the top five wouldn’t be bad.
