Really? Wake Forest is undefeated in late September, and Florida State is winless?
There might not be any fantastic wins on the Wake Forest slate, but who cares? It’s 4-0 with the defense playing at a high level and the offense fitting into the overall style and system perfectly.
It proved it could come through with a tough win when things weren’t going all that well on the road last week against Appalachian State, and it showed it could shut down the mediocre struggling offenses.
Now it has to deal with a desperate Florida State team that has to come out roaring.
The Seminoles couldn’t seem to create any sort of a break against NC State, getting down early and not being able to take control of the game with 11 penalties, no takeaways, and no clutch late stops in the 27-21 home loss.
Lose this, and with Miami, at Duke, and Louisville to follow, this great team’s season could quickly become an epic disaster.
One Reason Why Wake Forest Will Win
The FSU running game has yet to show up. Playing against Alabama and NC State will do that, but the Wake Forest defense isn’t any day at the beach, either.
The Demon Deacons haven’t allowed a touchdown run since giving up one in the opening day blowout over Presbyterian, with the line dominating behind the line with 33 tackles for loss.
Wake Forest will dare James Blackman – in his second start for the Seminoles – to try to win the game and will attack Cam Akers and a ground game that came up with a few nice runs against NC State, but couldn’t establish any consistent production.
Against an FSU O line that’s allowed 14 sacks so far, Duke Ejiofor and the Wake Forest defensive front should be frothing at the mouth.
One Reason Why Florida State Will Win
Blackman wasn’t the problem.
The freshman made a few bad decisions and had a few misfires, but he held his own under the pressure against NC State with 278 yards and a touchdown with no picks. As long as he’s not turning the ball over, he needs to hope the defense shows up and starts to produce as expected at the start of the season.
Wake Forest is easy. Stop John Wolford from taking off and running, force him to be uncomfortable, and don’t let the Demon Deacon offense slow things down to a stop. Appalachian State was able to own the time of possession last week and almost pulled it off.
Florida State’s defense should be able to swarm this week. It needs to be what it was supposed to be from the start.
What’s Going To Happen
Wake Forest is just good enough and just savvy enough to stay in the game throughout if FSU starts making mistakes early, but this will be when the Seminole defensive front shows up.
Forget about the Demon Deacons running a lick – it’s not going to happen. But FSU will be relatively conservative to keep Blackman from having to force any key throws.
It might not be a dominant performance, but finally, Florida State will win a game.
